View Full Version : What Is Your Perception Of Jesus
LostCause

Without getting into Christianity too much, or saying "He didn't exist" or "He is god" or anything like that, what is your perception of him as a person. What do you think he looked like? What do you think Mary and Joseph were like? Brothers and sisters? What do you think his upbringing was like? What kind of person do you think he really was? Supposing he was a person.
Cheers,

Jesus H. Christ or that ASSHOLE at my job?
Well, Christ, in my opinion, is like King Arthur. I doubt we'll ever find out if he is real. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

I'd picture Christ as the Eastern philosophies incarnated.

He was probably big, fat, hairy, leathery-skinned Jew with a big nose and some serious muscle on him.

He was a Hebrew, born in Israel. Father was a Carpenter, who taught his son the trade. Carpentry back then was a very labor-intensive skill. There's no way Jesus could have been this frail little rail and been a carpenter.
Additionally, Hebrews around that time tended to have big noses and be big and hairy and shit. Since Jesus was of a relatively common family, he would have worked outdoors a lot. This being before the advent of sunblock, his skin would have tanned and gotten fucked-up over the years. It would be brown and rough, like leather.
I think it makes perfect sense.
After 2000 years there is not enough real evidence for me to form a strong conclusion. I've heard convincing debates that he is a combination of men named Jesus.

It's good reasoning. My thought was just that someone who was both fat and heavily muscled would have required more than three nails to keep on a crucifix.

A non-violent revolutionary who fucked up the system of his time, and received the reward of all non-violent revolutionaries, a painful death.
The Hebrews of then were probably different than the Jews of now. Nowadays, a good amount of Jews are descended from a Turkic tribe that converted to Judaism after the diaspora. In any case, Jesus had to have been beautiful, beauty can't come from the unbeautiful. IMO, the Beatitudes, etc. are beautiful. Thoroughly impractical, but beautiful nonetheless.

I think theTrilemma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilemma) argument is pretty interesting:
Lunatic: Jesus was not the son of God, but he mistakenly believed that he was.
Liar: Jesus was not the son of God, and he knew it, but he said so anyway.
Lord: Jesus was the son of God, and thus spoke the truth.
So supposedly I can't claim that Jesus was just a great teacher, because that would make him either a lunatic or a liar, assuming that the Gospels correctly recorded Jesus' words.. So the only rational choice is that he was the Son of God, if you value his teachings.
I, however, still think he was just a great teacher, like the Buddha.

Being that Jesus, Joseph, and Mary were Jews, I'd say they had brown hair and brown eyes, along with tan skin.
Added: I'd say He wasn't fat, being that he was Constanly traveling, by foot, or boat, and that he fasted.

In appearance, I'd assume he looked like a regular middle easten like guy. We can't go by any pictures or paintings of him, as they were all done long after his death and are nothing more than artists interpretations. (Interestingly though, it wasnt until about the 4th century that he was shown bearded. Most pictures before that time showed our man as a smooth cheeked youth)
Someone did tell me he had siblings and from memory I think they were Jacob, Mary, Salome(?) Jude and one other (?). Any basis in this?
And if this is right, would these have been kids Mary and Joseph had afterwards? (Mary WAS married and couldnt've stayed a virgin forever. Hubby has needs.) Or were they kids Joe had from a previous relationship?

That's all true, but don't forget that he spent most of his childhood and adolescence studying under various rabbi's and traveling. I'm sure he learned the art of carpentry like the back of his hand, but I don't see him being incredibly burly.
Well, I don't know... May be. He did go apeshit with a bullwhip once on a bunch of people. He could've been a little man to get away with a stunt like that.

You know, I'm hearing a lot about what everyone thought he looked like but I'm not hearing very much about what kind of person you all think he was.

I think he was a very good Jew. A spiritual person who didn't care too much about money and material things. He was all about living a good life and being a good person.

However, I don't believe Jesus called God his father in any way different than say a church praise session would repeat over and over, "Oh Father thank you God Almighty, thank you Father for my hemmorhoids, thank you Father for teaching me the errors of my ways through killing my two children, etc."
I've forgotten most of my Bible, but I'm pretty sure that Jesus referred to God as the Father, which all Christians do. Most Christians nowadays call themselves children of God, and will happily offer to make you a child of God too, if you'll drop some money in the offering plate as it goes round.

You see, this is what's wrong with people. Instead of asking themselves:
-What do I look like?
-What kind of a person am I?
-What is my family like?
They go and ask themselves those questions about some imaginative fart from 2000 years ago.
People make me sick. Further, I'd like to abolish subjects such as history, geography and religion/ethics from high schools. And instead of all of those, there should be a subject where all the kids get to watch the news. And videos of themselves, showing how stupid they are.
Maybe then, we will have a normal generation of people, instead of a bunch of dickless freaks.

I think he was generally relaxed guy who didn't want to see everybody hurt each other anymore. People didn't listen to him (Roman and Jewish logic at that time followed that any problem could be effectively fixed with a knifing), so he called himself God to get their attention. It worked, more or less. I'd hang out with him. I definately lean towards his being born from Mary and Joseph, as younger wives in that time were not uncommon. It was not unheard of for a 13-year old to be married off and bedded by a man of forty. I just think they used a cover story to fit with Jesus's idea. Either way, he was definately ripped and tanned and could kick some serious ass, but didn't. It says alot more when a strong man is a pacifist than when a weak man is. Again, I'd chill with him.

Not god, not the son of god, just a person chosen by god to teach the bible to the people, before it was changed up into the crap it is now.

Seemed like a pretty decent guy based on a story I read about him. Don't remember him saying "I came here to die as a sacrifice to my daddy so he will let you losers into heaven". Seems like his fans added that part on after he was dead.
Wasn't there so I have no idea really.

John 3:16-18
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Clear enough for you? http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif)
And to Lost, I bet he was an ok guy. Had a really good temper (unless you ripped people off in church). Befriended scandalous tax collectors and prostitutes. I'd imagine Him to carry somewhat of a 'celebrity status' back then, but not having the ego of a celebrity. It did say He was welcomed into cities by people waving palm leaves and stuff. Well liked by the people, hated by 'the man'.
Oh man Jesus... He must've been awesome. Now the Bible is one weird book, with donkeys talking and shit, but once you reach the Jesus part... Then you go like dude, this guy seems really alright! He says cool things, he's all peace and love, he's like mellow yellow and... I wanna hang out with him! I think he seemed like a really nice wise guy. Damnit, I need a friend like Jesus. But yeah I guess that's the way a lot of people felt about him, seeing as they wouldn't let him be alone and shit.
I think most people would agree that he was really awesome, if they tried not to be so anti christian for a while, and just read about Jesus's sayings and doings.

He was a good man that taught tolerance and love to a generation of people who did not know what those two things were.
He also gave the Jews hope.
Even if he wasn't the Son of God, he was the most perfect human being ever recorded in history.

Done that. I was in Assembly of God. Like I wrote elsewhere "written by his fans after he was dead". So what.
Maybe he was just an average guy who wanted his 15 minutes of fame, it all got out of hand and the local press crucified him! Then his story got serialised by the Judian Echo and turned into a book!
