View Full Version : Why would God need animal sacrifices?

These passages from the bible seem to support killing animals in order to win God's favor. The question is why? I thought this was a bad thing since, the church only seems to bring it up when they speak out against those who belong to pagan religions.

The following passages seem to support it.

Genesis 4:4

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.

Genesis 8:20-21

And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a sweet savour.

Genesis 15:9-10

And he [God] said unto him [Abraham], Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another.

Exodus 20:24

An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

Exodus 29:11-37

And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD....

Leviticus 1:5

And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD....

Leviticus 23:12-18

And ye shall offer ... an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD....

Nummbers 18:17-19

Thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the LORD.

Deuteronomy 12:27

And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh.

Because Yahweh is as real as Marduk, Zeus and Ahura Mazda. He does have the originality of not belonging to a pantheon but his general old testament portrait does little to separate him from contemporary deities.

I know spiritually it had to do with a form of redemption for one's sins and showing respect for God.

As for the whole "and He smelled the sweet savour"...I dunno. Maybe He enjoys a good bbq?

To be honest, I don't really know why I participate in discussion in MGCBTSOYG anymore. It's like a lion's den; everyone's goal is to rip the few Christians that are present apart. http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif)

Notice those are all Old Testament books. The God of the Old Testament was very different from the God of the New Testament. The OT God was more along the lines of the traditional-God-will-smite-thee diety. The NT God was loving and kind. The differences are in that the ancient people's wouldn't identify with God if he was peaceful and loving; they would, however, if he was more of the traditional diety.

That doesn't answer anything. God doesn't need to have adobt a different persona in other to have people indetify with him. He can just as well make people indetify with him, and do so while preserving free will.

I didn't say it was a good answer, but its the right one. That's been drilled into my head for near 4 years at a Catholic high school.

I'm not trying to rip on christians with this thread. I'm merely pointing out things in the bible don't make any sense at all. I'm also pointing out a practice that other religions have done and been looked down on because of this act. Yet here it is in the bible and it isn't frowned upon. That's kinda hypocritical don't you think?
