I was raised Catholic, but I'm not so sure on how much I can take. It seems so fake. I realize religion is a man-made thing. I like the idea of God, but I do not like the Catholic church as an institution. We had Ash Wednesday mass today at school, and that's when I realized how I felt.

Now Priests and Bishops should be humble, right? Treat everyone equally. I always see pictures of him in the paper with all the lawyers / doctors / bigwigs of my community. My aunt owns one of the nicer restaurants in town, and I was there once and saw the Bishop come in and eat with my aunt and uncle. I don't really know hwo to say what I'm thinking.

I guess I think of the Bishop not as a religious symbol, but I see him as just another bigwig in town. Hanging out with the doctors and lawyers and shit. I never see him hanging around hobo's or anything.

It almost feels to me as if everything about Catholicism is pretentious(sp?). I don't know. I'm done ranting. Does anybody else feel the same way?

That's religion for you man. There are A LOT of selfish people in that circle.

Yes, but my view is confined to Catholics around my town, for I haven't seen many others.

Well, what is the role of the Bishop? He's the administrator and representative of his diocese. He acts like a big wig because he is a big wig. I never pay attention to what the Bishops do because it's usually just speaking engagements and trying to increase the "popularity" of the Church.

My suggestion, pay more attention to your parish priest. If he starts acting like a big wig, then get concerned.

I was born catholic and went to a catholic school my whole life. I was really into my faith at one point, untill I lost several people in my life and things just got bad. and I thought why me I'm a good person. things keep getting worse, I prayed, nothing got better, only worse. then i thought why. I never got to choose to be catholic, it was forced on my by my parents, the weird thing is also is that I'm adopted and my birth parents wanted me to be raised in a active catholic family, its been in my life forever and I just got sorta tired of all of it. I've been taking a break from religion, I still pray so often and I still am in my church youth group but i don't go to church or anything. I can't say thing in my life have goten alot better, but it has been going a bit up. but what i have noticed is that some preist are really great and some just are horrible. Even tho they are a priest or bishop they are still human, and do like to talk and eat and be normal

I read the earlier posts mentioning certain clergy as being "Big Shots" as though that's an excuse for what they've become... namely, lazy and non-participatory aside from their vacuous ramblings and social climbing escapades... that's a con and young people shouldn't buy into that for a second. You've travelled a path that's pretty common to many of us. I was born into a Catholic family and went to Catholic schools during my gradeschool years, but most of my classmates had the same attitude that I did... "Why am I here? Well, because they sent me here." Mass was boring, and I didn't have enough life experience to understand it, or judge whether what was being said made any sense. Now... as an adult... I know that from a rational, and usually from a worldly standpoint- it doesn't.

Still, although I'm an atheist, I strive for honesty and try to give credit where credit is due. I'm not on a quest to "chew on religion" as atheists are sometimes accused of (and a few actually are that way)... in fact, I honestly try to see and emphasize the good points of churches whenever I reasonably can.

The better churches offer social activities, and they can be a decent source of camraderie (beyond youth sports teams, where the fun might center around riding around to parties, getting loaded, kicking the crap out of people, and talking about which of the ethically void cheerleaders would be fun to bang... at least that's the way it was when I was young, since the local churches were awful lame- but still, I know a lot of us- who weren't happy with the ignorant, bigoted, sadism-celebrating Neanderthal culture we were stuck in, thought... "There's gotta be something better than this bullshit somewhere" as we played along with all of the mindless stupidity and brutality. There can be... it's just that too often the local churches (especially Catholic) are run by pompous and pathetic phonies, with any personal interest they ever had in their congregations (beyond the social climbing aspects, like rubbing shoulders with doctors and businessmen) long dead.

Young people lack life experience, but they're not stupid- and they sense it when people talk a lot, but when you put aside the blabber and examine what they actually do... meaning, their actions... there's little or nothing behind it. There are too many people like that in religion, and they're particularly over-represented in the Catholic organizations... if they even had any genuine interest in members of their congregations as human beings- especially young people- it's long gone. They're now burned-out and ROAD (Retired On Active Duty) assuming they didn't take up "The Cloth" for other reasons to begin with... like because they were homosexuals and the life of the ministry provided a socially convenient sanctuary for their sexual peculiarities. Or because they once were ambitious and envisioned themselves as eventually "going places" in the Catholic organization, or becoming politically influential (just like some of their peers did of IBM or General Motors) but they were passed over, so now they're content to sit on their fat asses and attend social functions. In the final analysis, whatever they once were (if anything) they've now become, for all intensive purposes, good for nothing.

I think that Catholisism has become to ritualistic, and is too rapped up in tradition. In my opinion it is like the Pharasees that were always trying to get Jesus into a trap.
