Is there truly any real difference from a major organized religion to a cult other than a few thousand years of a head-start, a larger following, and copious amounts of money?

Not really.

My personal line between cult and religion is when everyone who knew the founder has died it becomes a religion. At that point people must have faith and cannot be convinced by the Prophet/God or someone who knew him.
