The give us somebody for us non-Mormons to laugh at, and they also were involved in pioneering the American West.

You guys obviously don't watch Penn & Teller. Mormons own the Boy scouts of America, and their influence, although limited, is still present.

How so?

The Boy Scouts were founded by a Chicagoan.

I was in the Cub Scouts for two weeks, I saw very little Mormon influence. If Mormons are responsible for the values of the Boy Scouts, maybe the Mormons aren't so bad after all.

Well, "not so bad" if your values include discriminating against homosexuals, and any person who doesn't follow your particular religious values.

The Boy Scouts weren't founded by Mormons, correct, but Mormons are their largest contributers(if I'm not mistaken) and as such, they've slowly changed their rules to fit the Mormon "values".

Mormons maintain the most detailed genealogy information in the world.

They use it to baptise people "by proxy" (i.e. mormons babtise themselves in the name of you).

Particular religious values?

Pretty much the only thing they don't allow is open atheism. They even have special merit badges for religions like Buddhism and Sikhism(you do a pre-defined set of studies about your faith in your particular church, and you get the badge after your work is approved by your religious leader.)

Except for the no-gays-allowed rule, I see nothing Mormon about the values of the Boy Scouts beyond "thrift."

The Mormon religion doesn't contribute to society monetarily, as organized religions don't pay taxes. There are a lot of rich mormons too, and they're bound to paying a 10% tithe so the church has a large moneybin somewhere (ducktales style). I grew up in the mormon religion and believe me beneath the kind facade is myriad of ugliness and deceit.

The Church of Latter Day Saints is the fasted growing church in the US right now. They're like the Borg almost.
