View Full Version : Religious Holidays
I was just wondering where all non-believers stand when it comes to holidays like Easter, Christmas etc. Being an atheist, you would think that they would be meaningless - eg. Easter would celebrate chocolate, where as something like Christmas would celebrate presents.
What are you thoughts on these?

To me they are meaningless, but I still celebrate them for the presents.

Meh. I don't really think not believing in the root causes of the day makes them completely meaningless. I still celebrate because it's fun to celebrate. Let easter be about welcoming in the new spring and summer. Christmas be about giving and wrapping up the year. Just take the days as days to enjoy with your family.
Both Easter and Christmas dates were stolen by the church anyway from older religions, so you could even say that Christianity took the original meaning out of them too. http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif)

^ What he said. I don't care that maybe Jesus was born on christmas day ( it's not even proven ), I care that people get together and have fun. I don't even need presents. I'd rather go to a party with my mates and enjoy myself. Who cares about such an outdated thing as christianity!

Its more family tradition more than anything else. Most of my immediate family are atheist or what I call apathetic (They don't give a shit.) but we still get together for Christmas and Easter because that’s what our families have always done .

First off, no one else needs to believe in the same legends you do. What you fail to understand or decided to ignore is the basic meaning of the holiday. Easter is not celebrating the death of Christ but his ressurection which I think is a happy thing for most Christians. Next time you rant to people about a religious holiday especially one of the most basic and important ones of your own faith, figure out what is it before.
