View Full Version : My friend is TOO religious....some help here
He's catholic. roman catholic to be exact. I'm an atheist. I don't believe in god and all these "miracles" and that shit.
He was a cool guy, we used to smoke with him, drink with him, he even got wasted off his ass and threw up while eating at the pizzaria, which we got banned by, but that's a different story.
The thing is, we don't know how he turned so religious, it was so fucking unexpected. It was literally 1 day, he was talking about drinking, and BANG, the next day, he starts talking about god.
It's really fucking annoying. He stopped lsitening to music, drinking, smoking, and LIVING A TEENAGE LIFE. At lunch, he goes to the library to read the bible. At home, he reads the bible, he goes to confession every wednesday, when there really isn't anything to confess. He switched church because the priest there was becoming his mentor. He buying this thing called a jerusalem bible and liturgy of the hours or some thing like that. He's getting a job just to buy bibles.
He has no respect for other religions. Protestants are bad, becasuse "they aren't roman catholics", islam is bad "because they aren't roman ctholic". "the jews" are bad because "they're jewish, I've said enough" Buddhists believe "in a fat guy, which they're gonig to hell for, because they aren't roman catholic"
That's another problem. He does everything by "god's" command. The bible is always right, no matter what. If you swear, he says "jesus doesn't condone this" or "you're going to hell". He picks fights with the teacher because according to him "priests should be teaching us" He wants to start a protest to put religion in schools again. Once again, everythign he does is from the bible.
Another thing. In his views, you aren't catholic if you swear, have sex, masturbate, smoke, drink or basicaly HAVE FUN in general. He's not getting married because...HE WANTS TO BECOME A PRIEST. He's fucking 16 and already wants to become a priest.
Also, he quotes the bible at every chance he gets. Once again, because the bible is always right. Fucking annoying.
He's too one-sided. He doesn't want to hear other people's arguments, because "they're going to hell" or "the bible tells them they're wrong" I've wanted to show him PENN AND TELLER'S BULLSHIT! THE BIBLE to see what he thinks, but unfortunetly, he doesn't want to because...you guessed it...the bible is always right.
He gets angry that others don't respect what he believes in but that's stupid, because he doesn't respect what they believe in.
He tells me that the bible is right, I tell him to fuck off. He tells me to become roman catholic, I tell him to fuck off because I don't care. He tells me that sex and amsturbation and drinking and smoking is a sin. I tell him to fuck off and waste his money of the fucking bible.
He tries to convert others to become just like him. He's tried it on me, I've fucking had it.
I respect his religious beliefs, I just don't respect that he doesn't respect mine or anybody elses because he is always right because "the bible says so".
What do I fucking do, because I'm about to beat the shit out of him.
Ahaha also, his mother and father HIDE HIS BIBLE WHEN HE GETS HOME. His mother probably tries to send him to see a shrink. He probably busts his parents balls about this religious stuff too.

He's so staunch about the perfection of the Catholic church. Remind him that his Bible compiled by a committee 300 years after any of it supposedly happened. Remind him that his church believed that the spherical earth was 'heresy', that the heliocentric solar system was 'heresy', that illnesses were caused by demons, and they prohibited the autopsy of cadavers for 1500 years (pretty much halting medical science) because they considered the body a 'temple of the spirit'. It wasn't uncommon for heretics who opposed the churches ideas to be pursecuted, often tortured or killed.
Now they have rid themselves of all these asinine beliefs. They know the earth is round, it revolves around the sun, germs make people sick, there's nothing wrong with examining dead people, and recently declared literal belief in the 6-day creation story 'paganism'. His holy, god-inspired church has been proven wrong time and time again. How can something so inspired by god be so wrong, killing so many innocent people, time and time again?
Ask him what the predators on Noah's Ark ate. Ask him what happened to all the plants in the great flood. Tell him that God created the universe in 6 days, but how could he tell how long a day was before the earth was created? How do you know he wasn't using Jupiter days or Saturn days?
Ask him about the house arrest of Gallelieo. Ask him about the Spanish Inquisition.

He's young and impressionable; he may yet change his mind. Sadly, more often than not that's not the case, and he may well stay that way for the rest of his life.
One thing to remember about religious people, is that the vast majority of them will outright refuse to look at their belief system rationally. It's easy to poke holes in religion; but that'll do you no good when the person you're explaining it to won't listen. They're like politicians in that they become experts in twisting words and meanings to their own ends, so even if you argue with him, he'll either bullshit his way through it or ask someone else who can to do it for him.
Since the change was so sudden in your friend, I suggest you talk to him one on one and try to find out what caused him to close his mind so suddenly; he may just need some emotional support. It could also be that he's just a fucking moron... in which case you should mourn his loss.

lol, wtf is that. oh, wait it's a messed up penor, nasty.
Well, butch I would have a lot of respect for your friend if he wasn't a blind christian. I don't smoke or drink, but I do listen to music(ROCK ON BOB MARLEY!).

I agree with him. If you go against thes rules of the religion you aren't really what you say you are, are you? Your just as blind as your friend due to your desires.

I was raised as a strict catholic but i've since become an atheist and i have absolutely no respect for the catholic church...
ask him about those sick catholic extremists who stormed the funeral of a gay guy with placards saying things like "god hates fags"...sick bastards
also, ask him about charity in the catholic church...
it has alot of charities working for it asking you to give your money, but does the catholic church give any of its own money to charity....of course not...their MINTED too...they can afford a solid gold throne for the pope but won't give any of that wealth away...
the catholic church is backwards...

Get your mate to understand this and "all shall be forgotten"
Religions praise perfectionalism and because trying to be perfect/find perfect place under religion, failure becomes inevitably and often. Fear of failure then leads to unrelenting anxiety, only fleetingly relieve by occasional feelings of accomplishment and success.
But the thing is every failure leads to self-anger/hatred for being weak and to anger and rage towards "THOSE" we think make us feel that way. But because parents and cultures and society demand that we suppress these feelings as being socially unaccpetable. Furthermore, so painful are they that the mind goes till further and represses them, and thus prevents them from ever rising into awareness.
The repression leads to depression, which is a feeling of hopelessness, helplessness and weakness. This is occasionally relieve by anger, which is welcomed for its feeling of power and strength. Over the long term depression can cause changes in the brains chemistry. Then regardless of later achievements and successes, deep down there is still a feeling of worthlessness often there for the remainder of ones life. Even drugs or therapy may not relieve this feeling.
However since repression/expression is a polar pair, what is repressed must be expressed. The mind does this in a way that concels what is repressed. Self hatred is converted into the hatred of the controllers. Or the self hatred is converted into illness thereby earning ones own grief and sadness of others which then is converted into turning back to religion, who actually got them to the state they were in, in the first place.
Sort of see the cycle do you? The last thing I want to do is offend anyone, but that is what religions do to people.
what is your MSN, AIM, or YAHOO, Reality course?

I was 16 when i became an atheist, i'm now 20.
I had been churning over doubts in my mind for a while before that...i even got confirmed during this time (due to pressure from my parents..i didn't really want to).
I had always thought about the number of different religions about and it made me think 'what makes this one right?'.
I saw no differences between the amount of faith and belief in christianity and other religions but nothing that could make christianity stand out as being more true...that sent the cogs turning....i figured all relgions can't be right and nothing stood out about chritianity to make it more right than any of the others; then i thought about the possibilities of alien civilisations, and that if they exist they probably have thier own religions that have no relation to God (in the jeudo/chritian sense) and all of a sudden, christianity became lost in the crowd, and since alot of religions all claim absolute truth but are all very different, i figured that they must all be untrue...a comforting belief system that gives you the feeling that someone is watching over you and looking out for you, but a feeling and nothing more.
My loathing of catholicism came later; i found that though chritianity as a whole teaches not to judge, catholicism is the most judgemental branches of christianity there is, for instance my old priest wouldn't talk to lapsed christians and i've seen very little tolerance towards homosexuals and other religions, especially buddism and hinduism and i found this very hypocritical. On top of that i realised how extremely wealthy the vatican is and how it doesn't give any of it own money to charity...
i do have other reason for being an atheist too... http://tinyurl.com/qgyrx
