Apparently this didn’t end completely 400 or so years ago

Geocentrism refers to the theory (or belief depending how you look at it) help certain groups that the Earth is the center of the universe and does not move. Some Theories of Geocentrism involve the earth rotating

Heliocentrism is the theory (fact if you have any value for science) that the Sun is at the center of the Solar System and the Earth orbits it.

Today Heliocentrism is accepted as truth.

This was an is problem during the Renaissance when the Catholic church proclaimed that the earth was in the center of the universe, and a few radical thinkers like Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler disagreed with the church claimed that the earth orbited the sun. Eventually after a few hundred the late Pope John Paul II apologize for the churches actions. I can not find if he officially said the Earth goes around the sun or not but he did apologize for locking him away in his house for the rest of his life.

But some, I assume non catholic, Christians fundamentalists still today believe that the earth does not move citing some of the fallowing bible passages.

“He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”

-Job 26:7

“Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.”

-1 Chronicles 16:30

“Say among the heathen, Jehovah reigneth; also the world shall be established, it shall not be moved: he shall judge the peoples”

- Psalm 96:10

“The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.”

-Ecclesiastes 1:5

"The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.”

-Ecclesiastes 1:5 (New International Version bible, I posted this because I think it makes it clearer that the bible says)

“Jehovah reigneth, he hath clothed himself with majesty: Jehovah hath clothed himself, he hath girded himself with strength; yea, the world is established, it shall not be moved.”

-Psalm 96:1 (Darby Bible)

“And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.”

-Joshua 10:13

Also in genesis it says the earth was created before the earth and this fits in well with geocentrism

All from the King James Version bible useless noted

While most of these can easily be taken figertivly but I do not see how “, it shall not be moved” or “that it be not moved.” can be taken figuratively. The bible says in it black and white, the earth does not know. The other passages if taken with some literalness only support geocentrism such as Ecclesiastes 1:5 which literally says the sun goes around the earth. They are more passages that either have to be taken extremely literal of figuratively that support geocentrism.

Some pro geocentrism websites are http://www.reformation.org/stationary-earth.html http://www.fixedearth.com/ http://www.geocentricity.com/

Oh the ignorance

But what I don’t understand why don’t More Christian believe the earth doesn’t move and the sun orbits it? It says the Earth doesn’t move in plan black and white text. Christian will not believe this but will believe that the Earth is 12000 years to 5800 years old when they get the number by adding a bunch of dates and making a bunch of assumptions? Why?

Believing that God overoad all his laws of physics in the distant past is difernet than believing that he has been doing it constantly ever since. It is alot easyer to disprove that the universe orbits the earth than God created the universe in it's present form and made it look like he didn't.

The bible says pi is 3.

The bible tells us to kill people over petty things.

The bible tells us to keep slaves.

...etc

The bible also tells us the world is 6000 or 12000 years old (creationist groups can't agree, yet every group will claim with absolute 100% certainty that their interpretation is exactly right and that they are not being self-righteous by forcing it on others since they KNOW for sure what God says and they are just telling people).

People can be very stupid.

Like Lou said, get over it.

The bible are just ancient texts, God is just how you explain it.

Anyone, Christian or otherwise, that takes those verses to mean that the earth doesn't spin is simply ignorant.

Those verses are referring to the fact that the earth will not expire, be destroyed or removed from it's place in reality and the universe without God's involvement.

God is making a promise.

I'm still an atheist and all that, but you guys make this too easy. You misinterpret the essence of it; the Earth largely does not move. It sticks to its routine, it constantly goes in the same orbit. The Earth is never going to fly off in a random direction. The Earth doesn't move from where it was placed to be.

Then again, doesn't the orbit of the Earth keep getting bigger? Because of force or some physics shit?
