I thought the book was quite enjoyable. It intrigues me that a fiction novel would cause such drastic and flagrant responses from the various religious establishments.

ehhh... i read it, and it made me think, which is good. i think that the main problem that the religious groups have with it is that it makes people question their beliefs and/or actually do some research that might (probably will) make them reconsider their choice in religion; therefore causing the church to lose money.

btw: i was raised catholic, but i don't follow the faith because i don't believe in organized religion.

The book was indeed better, because it was able, through cleverly punctuated chapters, to give the impression that something exciting was happening when really it's just a few people sitting around talking art history. It's beyond me why people get so riled up about this particular book so much. Dan Brown didn't come up with any of it, these legends and theories have been around for centuries. On the other hand, Opus Dei is a real organization, so I can see them being pissed about how they were portrayed. Ultimately, the fevered rhetoric over the DaVinci Code is nothing more than another manifestation of the terror experienced by the old order, once so unchallengable, that is quickly losing its grip on its followers. If I were them, I'd take every little challenge personally too. As luck would have it, I'm not.

very good point. but I don't see why they'd be so pissed. it was fiction. i think most people understand it was fction and that that group isn't really that bad. though i dont know if they are or not.

so what religion are you?

I also think it will make people question it more, but i think thats what he was trying to do. but if a book like that makes you question your religion then maybe you shouldn't be that religion?

its that fact that he convulutes fiction and nonfiction that pisses people off. hes always claming his work is a work of fiction, but when your mixing it with facts, it obviously sends the wrong message tothe ill researched.

The story its self is still fiction. To make a realistic fiction novel it kind of has to be based on at least some fact, if you know what I mean.

The Da Vinci Code is simply a realistic fiction novel. It wasn't meant to attack Christianity in any way, so I don't get why people are getting so worked up over it. And I am Christian.

It also didn't help that Dan Brown did a piss poor job clarifying what was fiction and what was based in fact. That's the thing that pissed Catholics off the most. It wasn't that the book made them question their religion(EVERY Catholic I know who read that book didn't question their faith afterwards, because they knew most of what was in the book was fiction), it was that it made non-catholics get a poor perception of what they believe in. That's what pissed them off. It'd be the same thing if some insanely popular fiction book painted a confused picture of evolution, by mxing fact and fiction haphazardly without making clear distinctions between the two.

With that said, I enjoyed the book. I didn't really enjoy Dan Brown's other books though. I actually liked the book more for it's historical and art qualities rather than the supposed theological questions it raised.
