my family is jewish, but i don't believe in a god. never have. when people ask me what religion i am, i usually respond with "my family is jewish, but i'm an athiest." i'm 18, and was wondering if there was some way to 'legally convert' to atheism. (i don't care about capitalization or spelling, don't comment about it)

i dont think you get anything from being an atheist, and in the same note, there isnt anything different from being a jew a christian or a muslim when it comes to the law
atheist is just a word to describe your belief, as far as i know there isnt say a church you go to learn more about atheist beleifs

There are also no legalities involved in switching your belief system.
(and for that, i am grateful)

*walking down the street when the religion police stop you*
"Whats your religion son?"
"Ummm my families jewish but im atheist."
"Lets see your papers for confirmation."
"Oh shit..."
And then you spend the rest of your life locked up in the confession booth of a church.

Yeah, I don't really think you have to do anything. But I'm sure there's some group of atheists out there who would love to indoctrinate you to their ways like any religion would.

The only thing all atheists share is a lack of belief in any gods. The only thing this requires is the ability to think rationally.

Would you contend that faith does not involve reason and is an irrational act?

i lol'd -- "legally convert" huh? im athiest, you are what you are, you believe what you believe, there's no 'legal stuff' involved, and if anyone asks you anymore just say "im an athiest", you dont have to bring up your family.

If you were a member of some weird cults you might need cease and desist and restraining orders to get them to leave you alone after you quit. But that is about it.

I would not be suprised if the was an atheist church somewhere. They have a symbol that can be put on a military grave marker.

Your heritage and blood is still that of a Jew but being Atheist as people have stated is simply a belief system. I am a Agnostic of Russian Jewish heritage.

No, you just get some balls and tell people you don't believe in God/you're agnostic and you're not really sure, or whatever else you believe.
Lacking a belief in religion is NOT a religion.

Pay no attention to these people we atheists are a very exclusive group we don't let just anyone in. For a nominal fee I would be willing to mail you the necessary conversion paperwork, our rulebook, and a magic hat.

well as a matter of fact one could say faith has no true aspects of reason involved[well depending on what belief were speakin of]if its the christian one or anythere of relating to god then yes it is irrational ,i mean think about this rationaly how can some bieng which no one even can depict precisely in a manner intelligible enough to understand have such gargantuim powers enough to do what ever it pleases and then take that a step further and when someone asks ''well where is this mighty bieng ive yet to seen it in the sky or in existance at all''and then you get the reply from the christian of''you just have to have faith''oo yea that sure is rational?!-_-

That happens in the south all the time.
I guess the most official process to "convert "to atheism would be putting it down the census next time it comes around.
but that's minor, your an atheist when you say you are.

Lots of jews are secular, and even many observing jews are still skeptics.
