Lots of atheists here consider faith and reason as polar opposites and thinks science > religion. Is it just me or is that a more humanist approach? I mean, I call myself an atheist and have nothing but disdain for science. Grrrrrr... 58 hours without sleep for no good reason...

Why is it someone always has to post to the atheist that hes a fuckin moron for believing different?? i really dont understand. and for that matter i really dont understand why the atheist has to insult the christian just because of the way he/she believes. why is it everyone has to insult everyone else because they see things differently and believe differently?? well i think i just found the topic for a new thread.

and to the OP an atheist doesnt have to believe in science. half of it is just a bunch of hypotheses anyway.

Well, it's not surprising when you see the correlation between the core aspects of Humanism and the most common reason Atheists lack a belief in god, or outright reject the notion all together.

I'd say most atheists are atheists because they reject the notion of faith as evidence for a god, or as meaningful argument in favor of the existence of a god. They understand the importance of having evidence support claims, especially when the claims are extraordinary... and all of that represents a Humanist position.

I never said that atheists are fucking morons for believing (or not believing, rather) different. I said that they simply can be regardless of any god belief, period. This is because the original poster was an idiot, and appearently you are too.

PS: I am also an atheist.

^^No you were right he basically did call the OP a douce bag. Probably because he says he has nothing but disdain for science. I agree with Albatross' analysis. Find one example of an intelligent person and educated person that has disdain for science. You won't be able to find one because they don't exist. Science is founded on critical thinking and REAL WORLD RESULTS. If you have disdain for science, go live in a cave somewhere. Because the house you live in, the food you eat, the TV you watch, the car you drive, and the computer you are using are all products of science.

The op also seems to suggest that faith and reason are NOT polar opposites, when by definition, they are. Faith is belief without evidence, while science is about belief based on evidence.

Topic starter should follow-up with WHY he/she has such disdain for science. That should be interesting to read.

That's an incredibly ignorant statement. Please explain

I don't understand how you can have a disdain for a completely logical tool for understanding things. It is simply a method for debunking some theories and creating new theories. On the other hand, if you have a disdain for the institutional 'sciences', that is a whole different thing.

He's probably "spiritual". He's different and special and enlightened.

^Instead of all those adjectives, I use the phrase "full of shit." It's more to the point, and I hate beating around the bush, so to speak.
