It is quite obvious why people are religious...

Maslow's pyramid is accepted by a majority of psychologists.

Now, the reason why people become religious is obvious: It singlehandedly satisfies the need for safety in a human being. As such, for one to lose his/her belief in religion, the amount of evidence needs to be unimaginably high, and until that point they will be in a state of denial towards anything that could potentially make them lose their 'security'. This can be translated by: during any debate, a religious person will never view the evidence objectively, and judge accordingly. The religious person wants god to exist, so he will, by default, side with religion. As such, the religious person will enter a debate with a closed mind, making him blind to virtually all evidence shown to counter him. the same doesn't apply to a scientific man, he has no specific benefit in rejecting a religion.

To further support my arguments:
Mathematical, physical and virtually all scientific theories will be tested again and again to be certain on the rigourousness and validity of said theory. These tests will occur both by the inventor himself, and by other scientists in his community. In fact, scientists want to prove each other wrong. For in this community, you are given kudos for both proving and disproving theories.
Religion doesn't work that way. I myself have never heard of a religious person actively trying to prove his religion wrong out of their own free will (and still remain religious). All their investigations of manuscripts are to counter claims of falsehood. As such, they will jump to any theory, credible or not, that will be able to exempt them from a criticizm. Also, in a religion, if you attempt to prove a contradiction in the religion's belief, you will be rejected from the religion as someone who doesn't have faith. They don't want people questionning their religion.
In conclusion, religious people are religious because they are blinded by the benefits of a religion.
This is comparable to a commonly known ebay scam. Many people will pay cash via western union for a laptop, knowing it is an insecure form of payment, simply for the possibility of a cheap laptop. This occurs even after ebay constantly posts warnings...
