Try taking the quiz at this link: http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html
I took it and if I remember correctly, the first type of Buddhism that fits me most was Theravada Buddhism. From what I remember, me and you have the same type of thoughts on God and I'm betting it will be the first type of Buddhism on your list too.
^^^ you were right, i am said to be theravada... then again nichiren isnt/wasnt an option so you cant say that thats deffinately true

quote:Nichiren's independent studies led him to conclude that the Lotus Sutra contained the only true way to salvation and that chanting the phrase namu myoho renge kyo ("salutation to the Lotus Sutra") is the way to attain enlightenment.
quote:Daimoku ("sacred title") is the practice of reciting the phrase namu Myoho renge kyo ("salutation to the Lotus Sutra"). This is chanted repeatedly for as long as several hours daily, often using a mala (rosary) to keep track. In Nichiren Shoshu, this chant is directed at the Gohonzon, a copy of a tablet inscribed by Nichiren that has been blessed by a priest. The Gohonzon is often encased in an elaborate shrine or altar.
Fuck that shit!

I thought Secular Humanist would be on top for me, but it was second. Apparently I'm 100% Unitarian Universalist. Hinduism was last on the list.

We all seem to be pretty much up there with the Unitarian Universalism...
Check out the other quizzes. You can see what kind of Muslim you are. http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif) http://www.beliefnet.com/features/quiz/index.html
I turned out as
"spiritual seeker.
Ibn Battuta traveled the Muslim world looking for answers. Like this famous traveler, you are also looking for answers and have also found yourself wandering through the world of Islam. The spiritual realm of Islam particularly appeals to you. You probably toy with the idea of Sufism and may enjoy reading mystic poets such as Rumi or Hafez. For you, Islam is a state of being that leads to your ultimate connection to God through your submission to Him. Although Islam often guides you on many practical questions, you are more likely than not looking to connect to God and others on a more spiritual level. Many of the social regulations or rules of Islam may seem daunting and unnecessary. You continue to have questions, as well as faith.
*clear throat*
what in the blazes is the point in talking about islam here??? this is about nichiren buddhism...

lol Martini seemed to want to see what kind of Muslim I showed up on his test.
here is what kind of Hindu I showed up as:
You are a philosopher Hindu.
You are philosophical and abstract. Your Hinduism is intellectual; your love of the tradition is best found in the great speculative sources of the Upanishads and the philosophical traditions of the Acharyas. In your spare time, you're sometimes caught reciting from memory Patanjali's Yoga-sutras. You read lots of books and are a true sojourner along the jnanamarg, the path of knowledge.
and
25 - 34
JOSEPH (Jacob's son). Self-assured and proud of it, you're leadership material through and through. Hey, can you help it if other people think you know it all? You do!
and they said I'm a:
Hillary Rodham Clinton Christian
(a.k.a. "Left-Leaning Traditionalist")
You think the Bible is divinely inspired, and you say Jesus was the Son of God (but secretly aren't so sure). You go to church when you can squeeze it in between soccer games, brunch, and "Meet the Press.” You admire Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, Bill Moyers, and the Dalai Lama; and have read Kathleen Norris' "Cloister Walk" and "Conversations With God." While watching "The Passion of the Christ," you cried during the flashback when toddler Jesus fell and Mary ran to him, but many other parts of the movie bothered you. You eat boneless chicken breasts, organic produce, and designer ice cream. You talk a lot about the value of community but can't quite remember the name of the guy two houses down. You ardently support gay rights even though you don't really want to think about what those people do. You believe the surrounding culture is polluted and blame it on big corporations. You give to charity but are more likely to help the Sierra Club than your church. The power of Christianity for you is the sense of community and the emphasis on love, forgiveness, and helping the less-fortunate.
and a:
You are a Tzimmes Jew.
Like this Sabbath-evening fruit and sweet-potato side dish, your Jewish identity is highly traditional, even as it adapts with changing times. A basic recipe is supplemented with various individualistic flourishes. Judaism plays an integral role in your life, though your identity is not defined solely by it.
lol they didnt have a Buddhist one available I think!

ANYWAY MrMan can you tell me about your personal beliefs! What do they include?
well, my beliefs are:
buddha was a groovy guy who said groovy stuff... buddhism is a philosophy rather than a religion.
enlightenment is something everyone can acheive as it is not supernatural, rather an awakening given a name...
and to do with christianity- i reckon jesus was a good philosopher but not the son of god as there is no god, i think he was a stoner... it was common practice in those days to take drugs, then again it is still lol
well thats about it, its hard to be specific, but that pretty much sums it up for me... i was brought up agnostic/atheist so i doubt i will ever have much faith, thats why i prefer buddhism as a philosophy

I started a nice little debate on that site about a week ago. It's gotten a little out of hand though.

Years ago, I had a very hot Buddhist GF, Itook up chanting and it seemed to help--but we broke up before I got around to building an altar.

Definately there are extra terriestrials... i mean what are the odds of there not being alien life (intelligent or not) in our massive universe... how many solar systems are there just in our galaxy? i dunno, but there's surely ET

My wife is a nichiren nut. She gets up at 5 in the morning and I hear her going bzbbbzbbzzbbzzbzzzbz in the gohonzon room. Juzu (sp?) is the name of the beads, mala is a Sanskrit term. Seems to work; she's got a big heart.
Zen Buddhism seems to have taken hold in America more than any other form of Buddhism.
^Zen is probably the most predominent in America.
