View Full Version : "Im not a slave to a god that doesnt exsist"
This is a quote from "Fight Song" by Marilyn Manson. I've been thinking alot about religon latly, and it just seems as if its all just pointless. You've got stupid Christians preaching about not having sex before marriage and Muslims blowing themselves up in the name of "Allah". Religon seems to do nothing but cause problems and give false hope to the weak and ignorant. Im sure this has been posted millions of times but /rant
I happen to agree with you, but even if we didn't have religion, we would only find something else to argue over.

And I'd have to agree with you. I just dont understand how people dont see how pointless religon is. Its also outdated. 500 years ago everyone said everything in the bible was true. Now we know alittle better, but then the relgious idiots just come up with new explainations that cant be proved/disproved.
did you just take insight from a mm song?

Religion is pretty much introduced to people straight from birth, (ok maybe not right away but, when you're old enough to start learning about things) by a good majority of families.
So by the time you've gone to school, (which also forces, yes I said forces, you to take religious education) and you've learned about science and basically grown a brain to think logically with, It's just to late, the damage has already been done. When people have believed in something since before they can remember they don't like to think they were wrong.
Well again in the majority that is, some people do begin to question God and decide to break off and become atheist or choose one of the other none God religions.
But for the most part people refuse to renounce God because they simply are too scared to take the chance of going to hell.
Did that make sence at all?

there's nothing wrong with religion unless you take too far like what the fanatics do. god keeps some people sane. and if you say religion is bad then you are as ignorant as the people that blow themselves up.

Agreed.
For the most part, the world's [major] religions teach positive values and acceptance. While God may or may not exist, the IDEA of one keeps its followers sane.
Religion is one of the few things on Earth that is actually beneficial to people. It is a comfort; one that takes a responsible approach on matters that are important to many people.
And while I may have stated before that believers need to start thinking for themselves, they truly have already made up their mind. That decision may not make much sense to me, but it sure is leading them to be a better person.
I don't believe in any sort of God. But I sure am thankful for those that do. Believers put so much hope into the world, and truly do make it a better place.

I dont agree with this. Why do people need "god" to be empowered? I don't believe in god, yet I am for the most part well-balanced, sane, and fully in control of my life. I dont need a god to make me feel secure

Yes I did. Have you seen the interview that Michael Moore did with him? I have a huge respect for MM.
it causes problems when people start thinking that there's is better.
Selfish thoughts. Selfish actions.
i think most religions try to teach otherwise. so the people you see doing things like that, arnt really good people. they jsut think they are.

religion, like everything, is good in moderation...
its just people who take everything with literal meaning and believe that no one else can be even a little correct.
a few people that are crazy about their religion make the rest of us look retarded.

Okay. So, agreeing with the thread starter, Religion does more harm than good. Still, that is only the tip of the ice berg in terms of the negative aspects of Religion: False hope, given to week, ignorant people who cannot bare to comprehend a full stop to life; control over entire nations, all in the name of God; Insecurities and lacking self-esteem, for example - you beg God for strength, when you only have to believe in yourself, then, you praise God for something you have accomplished on your own; Answers to questions that can be given a logical explanation by modern science; Religious extremism, causing tens-of-thousands of deaths world wide every year; Many different interpretations of the same Religion, leaving a direct path an enigma, not to mention the thousands of other religions in existence; the list goes on...
All of these imperfections are what makes the concept of Religion incredibly human. This theory has always bothered me, as what gives us the right, as humans, to assume we continue after death? A truly arrogant notion, peppered with our ever expanding, insecure curiosity; many of us spend our entire life asking questions, yet most of the time, we never find the answers.

When you say that quote, aren't you saying that god DOES exist though?

You were the kid I hated in high school...
If Marilyn Manson gives you deep spiritual revelations you have bigger problems than can be fixed here, but that aside... In politics religion is used as a war tactic. Convincing your soldiers that they're dying in the name of the lord is a great way to justify killing someone and increases trigger rate. Wars over land and money and power have been blamed on religion for as long as there has been religion and war.
Don't be fooled by propoganda.

I read up on kabbalah and eastern mysticism a long, long time ago when I was interested in studying gnosticism. When you look at it with no faith whatsoever and expect evidence, it's really really empty and just kinda sad that this stuff fullfills people's lives.

whoa whoa whoa. Slow down there. I was NEVER "That kid in high school" I think you have the wrong impression of me. I dont take "deep spiritual insight" for mm. I just thought that was a good title for my thread. I'm not some goth or vampire. I'm the average 19year old college student.

The funny thing about fighting about religion is that it's the one thing that you can't prove wrong or right.
I could say "I am the reincarnation of Jesus Christ". There is no way that ANYbody would be able to prove me wrong, and there's no way that anybody would be able to prove me right (including myself).
People would try, and they would use the bible in both the right, and the wrong context to prove me wrong, but nobody knows if the bible was just written by some intoxicated man 100 000 years ago, so I could bring that up, say prove me wrong, and STILL, nobody would be able to prove it.
Overall, it would just piss people off, and while yes, without religion we would just find something else to cry about, we would be fighting over something that is possible to have a right or wrong answer.
