View Full Version : Why?

If God or some higher power/supreme being put us here, why?

Sure, maybe he wants to see that we're good enough for heaven. Why even bother? Why make a heaven and people and souls and earth? And the rest of the universe? Isn't that just a waste of energy? I mean, it's not like we do anything to make God more powerful in heaven, except maybe to feed his ego.

Or maybe it's for his entertainment. But then why aren't we allowed to do "bad" things? Or sin, you might say? Isn't it more entertaining if we're hurting and backstabbing and doing bad things to each other? Where's the entertainment in watching a bunch of people run around doing ridiculous things trying to please God? Again, maybe to feed his ego... but isn't he a loving god?

Maybe it's all about us, and our souls... but if so, what's the point of living at all, even if you're a good person. If you're going to spend an eternity in heaven, 80 or 90 years really isn't all that long. Doesn't seem long enough for us to prove ourselves worthy.

I think my question is why would God ever create us? It seems so pointless.

I think I just explained to myself why I believe in evolution.

And it's ideas like this that keep me analytical and scientific of all things. Good post!

Scenarios like this always make me think Sim City.

Its a good question though.

Typical Christian answer: "God is far beyond our mere human minds. We can never know why he made us, nor do we have to. Only that we serve him forever and ever. That's all that matters."

Good point. If there is a god then it is a sadistic bastard that plays games with human lives. I say you just live your life how you want. If there is an afterlife and god is "loving" then you'll be let into heaven anyway. If there isn't an afterlife then you've got nothing to lose either way.

God made us not for him, but for us. He wants us to be happy, and if we stop living for ourselves and live for him, we will be happy, especially when we get to heaven.

Blech!

The above seems to be the general idea I got from billy Graham's answer:

Of course it doesn't explain why God would allow billions of non-Christians around the world to suffer merely because they've been brainwashed by another religion or have used there intellect to choose no religion at all.

Or why he didn't send Jesus down alot earlier, why he tells us to stone others who don't observe the Sabbath, etc.

God is, of course, pure spirit. We were created to manifest in the physical that which could not be manifested on the spiritual.

Our purpose is to create and to experience, to be and to declare Who we Really Are. We are, really, whoever we choose to be.

We may choose to be loving and fearless and joyous, and thus manifest our birthright, the kingdom of God which is within us.

Or we may choose to behave like assholes and be mean and paranoid and snotty. Either way, God loves us and showers us with blessings.

But why? Why only 80 or so years? Compared to an eternity in the afterlife, that doesn't seem nearly long enough to "declare who we really are."

Yeah, we are who we choose to be, but what does that have to do with God?

There have been some interesting/fantastic answers so far guys... Thanks, and keep it up. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

Maybe we're a video game.

Not like the sims, but something where we each have challenges, and if we meet them we "win" (go to "heaven") and if we don't, we "lose" (go to "hell").

This is, of course, assuming that there is a god who created us.

Then again, who's playing the game?
