View Full Version : In a week's time, I'm going to deface a Koran. For coursework.

Well, the story goes a little something like this:

For our graphic design GCSE, we have two or three units (I've forgotten), and for the second unit, basically we have to do something unusual. So our teacher asked us to bring in a hardback book to cut up and draw on and shit. So the minute before I leave for school I grab the nearest hardback book I can find - which just so happens to be a copy of the Koran.

Of course, when I brought it in and explained the situation I met both laughter and applause, but the best was my teacher: at first he was cautious about the whole thing and thought I was going to get myself gang-raped at the local mosque, but he then decided that I had actually thought about this a lot and it was a great way of showing how free speech is being violated, how it's a classic example of a very clear boundary between offensive and funny, blah blah bullshit blah.

So now I'm getting an A* for ripping the shit out a Koran and drawing god knows what on it, and Allah's going to kick my ass.

Discuss.

If he's truly trying to do this for free speech ask if you can switch it to a Bible to see his reaction.

How is defacing a Koran, "showing how free speech is being violated?"

We live in a time when free speech is pretty much a synonym for blasphemy.

Bad karma dude! Look at the reaction the pope had, if you receive one hundreth of a percentage of that it's still a lot of negative energy coming your way. http://www.totse.com/bbs/mad.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/mad.gif)

What's free speech have to do with it? Your free to go spit on the mafiosa or the hells angels or even the local gang bullies, but is that wise? The brute will still mash you into the pavement whether you are free to tell him what a load of shit his beliefs are or whatever!

At the very least have a read of the Koran and look into Islam, I'd suggest the works of Rumi as a good starting point, and then see how you feel. Use your own mind and powers of discrimination, do not be a sheep. Simple cause and effect, you create a negative cause, you will get a negative effect. Alternatively if you can't get out of it you might consider chopping out only the good bits to use for project, learn why so many intelligent humans believe these things, or maybe you could be the one who gives us all a balanced view of Islam?

Peace be with you http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

Using that logic, no one should ever do or say anything that may cause some people to get angry or have some sort of negative reaction.

If the Pope for instance, actually believes that exposing Islam for what he believes it is, will cause the positive results to outweigh the negative results, then he shouldn't have stopped himself from saying what he said. Even the building of a Buddhist temple will cause some people to have negative reactions.

He's not free to do that. We aren't given that freedom and it's against the law.

You're assuming that he hasn't already done so, or that an understanding of what it actually says is necessary for whatever point he may be trying to make.

I've read about Islam, I've studied it a lot, I respect most Muslims a lot, I even tried living as one for a while and it's fucking hard. This isn't out of spite or anything, and you're right - the whole free speech crap is complete bullshit. But this is what my teacher said, and in the end he decides my grade.

I really doubt he would care about a bible.

Oh, I will.

There's been talk about this making it into a local newspaper (ha). If it somehow does then I'll post the article.

Why did you "just have a koran laying around"?

Cut the Koran and New Testament up and merge them together.

Why should one have respect for something one sees as bullshit?

because a lot of other people think it isn't, if i don't think you deserve to live does that mean i can kill you?

You can get them from the 'free stuff thread' in IFIOTW.

There’s a difference between courtesy and respect. I can give them courtesy to save my life, but I shall never give them respect; religion is too horrible a thing to deserve respect.
