Apocalypse Wanderer

As our society goes on, the word sacred blemishes and fades. Once sacred things are now stripped of their old importance. I was pondering religion, as I often do, and I came upon a question.
What in our society is sacred? What around us is something we would die for?
My first thought is that we would die for our children. But after reading all of the archives on the recent amount of child abuse I am even beginning to discredit that idea. I used to think that a parent could never kill their child. I have been proved wrong so many times I am starting to think that is the norm.
My second thought was perhaps lovers. Wouldn't you die for the one you love? Then I remembered that people don't last long together, and that love is a temporary and fragile thing. So maybe, for a little while, but that willingness to sacrifice your own life for the one you love fades sooner or later. So I go on.
Does anyone have any ideas? Because if we care nothing for anything but ourselves, then we as a species have sunk deeper than I thought. Well, your opinion counts.
