View Full Version : IS religion the root of 'evil'?

1. Are all religion of the dogmatic, oppressive kind?
2. It appears that the religions I’ve read have some “good” and some “bad”, therefore, is it the religion that causes catastrophes or certain modes of people who use it to justify actions?
3. Religion is clearly not needed by all (if it was, there wouldn’t be atheists), but do you think religion is necessary for anyone?

How can religion be the root of all evil? Humans created religion, religion is a product of humans, so if religion is the root of all evil then humans are the root of all evil.
Which is true. Because evil does not exist in the rest of the species here.

What religion does is moving the purpose of morality from fulfilling mankind's happiness to fulfilling the arbitrary wishes of an impossible being. While this is not necessarily the "root" of evil, it certainly provides justification for much of the evil that exists.
Some say money is the root of all evil. Being poor ass broke I wouldn't know. http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif)
Not the root of all evil but more like a sub root or stem of a good deal of evil in my opinion
Well, you have to think that this is just temporary.
I know it's temporary..
Say if someone else thinks we're to be like this for as long as we exist, or that we've been like this for as long as we've existed, well, we just don't know that.

^^ Uhh, that's kind of irrelevant surely? Life is not a timescale to way up the pains of the present with future "good", at least not really...
And no, religion isn't the root of all evil, it's done a lot for the world, and will continue to do so. The dogmaticism and blind ignorance of fundamentalist relgious people really is disgusting, but many religious people are ok, and have used the moral, and social bonds that their religions created for the good of humanity.
Without something unifying the human race we'd really just drift appart into our own egoistical, material obsessed dream-reality.
Oh wait, that's already happening http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif)

What is it that makes humans evil? Other animals steal, kill, and rape.

But, they don't do any of these things maliciously to harm the other creature. They don't go about to "harm" other creature. They harm other creatures in their efforts to feed and shelter themselves. Humans sometimes actually think of ways to harm their fellow man just for the sake of hurting them.
And I'm not saying that humans are evil, I'm saying that if religion is the root of evil, then humans are the root of evil because humans created religion.
