I heard someplace that Quetzalcoatl (the Aztec and Mayan god, though the Maya called him Kukulkan) was a historical figure kind of the way Jesus was (we have accounts of his life, but no "proof"). I also read that he lived roundabout 950 AD. Can anyone confirm this, or correct me?

quote:In Xochicalco (700-900 AD), the political class began to claim that they ruled in the name of Quetzalcoatl, and representations of the god became more human. They influenced the Toltec, and the Toltec rulers began to use the name of Quetzalcoatl. The Toltec represented Quetzalcoatl as man, with god-like attributes, and these attributes were also associated with their rulers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatl

From what I understand, there were just someone taking it's name and claiming to be the physical manifestion of it.

They also believed that the leader of the first European Conquistadors who "discovered" South America was Quetzacoatl returned.

the aztecs or at least those south americans people who lived there believed that cortez was the quetzalcoatl. At least the coming of Quet... was predicted. Hence they didn't put up much of a struggle and let him kidnap their emperor and held them to ransom. Which ended up ruining their empire as that spanish bastard killed the emperor, took all the gold, take over the cities and herd them to become slaves.

Basically, OWNED
