View Full Version : So the Mormons called on me today...

Two yank missionaries turned up at my door this evening, I answer the door and they want to talk God. We had a real good chat for about 15 minutes, they didn't even try to convert me - they just wanted to know why I'm an Atheist and how I can be happy with no prospect of an afterlife, whilst I wanted to know how they can dispute the Archaeological record. After that they left me with some literature and moved on to the next house with us both having gained an insight as to the views of "the other side". They were quite pleased as they don't usually get such a nice reception from students!

How do you guys react to Mormons/Jehovah's witnesses/Random God people? Do you invite them in and have a chat or tell them to piss off? Do you think that these people have a right to canvas your neighbourhood?

If all of them are as nice as those Mormons, I'd like some more! I don't get enough philosophical discussion in my house - I'm fine with this kind of thing as long as they don't try to convert me! Discussion I enjoy though.

Mormons got Kolob and gold tablets.

Scientolgist got Xenu and space DC-8s

Jehovah witnesses got 1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925 and dead children. (Years they said Jesus was coming back and due to there no blood transfusions practices. respectivly)

Also so funny

I've never had Mormons knock on my door, but I've plenty of Jehovah's Witnesses. They usually don't try to engage in chat, they just offer me some of their propaganda and move on.

I don't really mind them, they're not very obtrusive and are always polite.

I answer the door with a nice "And what the fuck do you want cunt?"

But once I got those pricks in disguise, they didnt look like they normally do, in suits etc. And after the semi-hostile answer they got from when I answered the door, they told me to give a pamphlet to my parents, he purposely held it upside down so I couldnt see it. Then I closed the door, and when I looked at it it was bible basher bullshit and they had already moved onto the next house.

So I lit it on fire and put it out the front of my house on the path. I think they got the point

I have a few Mormon friends. I too think the whole thing is nearly as bad as Scientology, but we live and let live. They are mostly extraordinarily nice from my experience, almost to the point of creepiness. I've also had the displeasure of meeting the rather bitter ones.

Love Bombing (http://tinyurl.com/vne2a) is the act of being overly nice and loving to manipulate people.

quote:Love bombing is the deliberate show of affection or friendship by an individual or a group of people toward another individual. Critics have pointed out that this action may be motivated in part by the desire to recruit or otherwise influence.

As of 2005, the phrase can be used in three slightly different ways.

* Certain organizations, notably the Children of God and the Unification Church, use or have used the phrase themselves to mean a genuine expression of friendship, fellowship, interest, or concern.

* Critics of "cults," notably psychiatrist Margaret Singer, use the phrase with the implication that the "love" is feigned and the practice is manipulative. "Love bombing" is often cited by critics as one of the defining characteristics of a "cult."

* "Love bombing" is sometimes used by critics of organizations which neither use the term themselves nor are usually considered to be cults, such as Alcoholics Anonymous. In this context, a reader could infer that the critic's intention is to suggest that the organization has some "cult"-like characteristics.

Unlike the "Flirty Fishing" practiced or once practiced by the Children of God, "love bombing" is usually nonsexual.

I hate when they come around, I usually just ignore them and pretend I'm not home.

I did get stopped in the street once on my way to work, They started going on about evil, the dark arts and witchcraft.

Last time the Mormons came around, I invited them in. We had a two hour discussion on philosophy and theology. It was educational for both sides, I think.
