Katharine Jefferts Schori (a former oceanographer, BTW) has been installed as head honcho (ie, Bishop) of the Episcopal Church of the US. I think that what she said in a recent interview are worth sharing.

Can science and religion coexist? "Oh, they absolutely can. In the Middle Ages, theology was called the queen of sciences. It asks a set of questions about human existence, abut why we're here and how we should be in relation to our neighbors and with the divine. And science, in this more traditional understanding, is about looking at creation and trying to understand how it functions."

On intelligent design. "I firmly believe that evolution ought to be taught in schools as the best witness of what modern science has taught us."

Is Jesus the only way to get to Heaven? "We who practice the Christian tradition understand him as our vehicle to the divine. But for us to assume that God could not act in other ways is, I think, to put God in an awfully small box."

It's not like the pope has authority to put words in god's mouth. Oh right, nevermind.

Episcopals are PROTESTANTS.

Some people really need to pay attention.

Well, for those who didn't know one way or another, you use of the word "bishop" probably threw them off...

I'm standing by my dumbass statement.

Anyhow, these wishy-washy christians are worse than the fundies, in my opinion. Why don't they just give up already?

"You are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of My mouth."

So...Christians are blind zealots when they ignore science and think they're the only right ones.

And then they're lukewarm/wishy-washy/worse than fundies when they maintain an open mind and actually follow the primary commandment of their 'saviour' to accept all, even enemies, as if they were you brother?

Can you not accept that a good deal of people use a faith in a god to keep themselves going? What is wrong with someone having a personal belief, especially if they think there are other valid personal beliefs aside from their own?

I thought this was worth a bump, being as reason and common sense from religious leaders are increasingly scarce.

If they want to believe there's a good, gentle force in the universe that wants good for mankind, let them. Fundies push their beliefs on everyone else, beyond that there's no reason to harrass people for it

WTF? I did not type this. I have not posted in this thread.

Its not even listed under the 'all posts by Obbe' page ... did some asshole steal my moniker?

Wait, that was over a year ago? Well who knows then, maybe it was me. But that sounds kinda fucked up.

I disagree. Christianity at its most fundamental basics does not teach that the entire world is supposed to be Christian. In fact, the Bible implies that Christianity as we know it today will NEVER be universal. (I say "as we know it today" because the mode of the religion changes after the Tribulation period) Another thing is that the Bible teaches that if someone doesnt wish to convert, you move on.

The Bible doesnt even teach that Christianity is supposed to be a form of government of people. It is a government of one's self and of the church and that is where it ends.

Yes.

Assholes are assholes, regardless of their beliefs or lack of beliefs.

Agreed. But assholes who truely think you will go to some mythical Hell if you don't believe EXACTLY what they do, and who think their God wants them to kill you for it are more dangerous than most.

This group includes some Christians and some Muslims.

If they really want to feel guilty after touching themselves, let them. As long as they leave everyone else alone
