How about Ibn Warraq? He writes under a pseudonym because he doesn't want to get killed by whacko Islamists. He's well known for his books on Leaving Islam, is he a bigot and a racists too?

Islam is simply the result of increasingly effective religious propaganda, like a psychological virus that evolves to become harder to treat. Look at the path of the Abrahamic religions. Judiasm->Christianity->Islam.

Judiasm is an ethnic religion. By definition they don't try to aquire converts. But they have done well at insulating themselves. Promise of heaven, God chosen people are effective tools.

Christianity was a huge breakthrough. Go forth and convert, not only will God like you more, but you're actually doing the other person a favor. Inclusion of hell adds a terror-zest to the promise of heaven. Only real problem is that there's a dissonace between Old and New Testamants, and it's pretty up in the air if violence to convert is acceptable.

Then comes Islam. The psychological bondage to God Judiasm started is perfected. Heaven gets better. Hell becomes somewhat less of a scary thing. Converting by any means is clearly defined as acceptable.

Really Christians, don't be hating Islam just because it's a more effective plague on humanity than you are.

Saddam's Iraq was actually a left-wing country technically. Saddam was a secular socialist.

I think it's rather simple. All three of the religions have their violent parts in their respective holy books, including Judaism and Christianity. And Christianity has a bloody and violent past. But, then came the Enlightenment and the mainstream view of reading the Bible in a literal way gave way to Biblical minimalism. During the Enlightenment things such as reason, logic, democracy, etc. were developed (republicanism in America is a great example). Since then, European and Christian society has been largely governed by these secular Enlightenment ideals.

The Jews went through something similar called Haskalah.

The Islamic faith, with it being the youngest of the three Abrahamic faiths, has not gone through any such revolution of ideas or Enlightenment. Look at the Muslim world and you see that they live in a backward culture: equality, democracy, women's suffrage, reason, etc. hardly exist and a very conservative reading of the Koran is the overwhelming way Islam is practiced in the Mid East.

Bush thought that this Muslim Enlightenment could be sparked by creating a democracy in Iraq. Obviously he was wrong; the path to Hell is paved with good intentions. The liberalization of Islam will have to come from within the people in that region and until that happens we will have to deal with Islamic terrorism and extremism.

Yes, this is true. Madrasas educate children for free. So, usually the poor children get indoctrinated into messages of hate against Israel and the US. And like Aero says, it is well-documented. The textbook in madrasas is solely the Qu'ran and the imam is the teacher. Madrasas are big in countries like Pakistan.

What others have said about the "westernized" schools maybe true for the rich children that live in countries like Qatar and UAE. But that's only 1% of the Middle East. Most of the Middle East is poor and lives in Islamic strongholds.
