I don't understand the christian's idea of the holy trinity.
The holy trinity says that the holy spirt, god, and jesus are all one and the same.
How does that work? All those times in the bible Jesus was praying to god. Was he just praying to himself?
Christians say Jesus is the son of god right? Well how can he be the son of himself?
Somebody explain. I use to be a christian, but never understood this(along with the many other things I don't understand about the christian faith).
One God. Three Persons. You can't understand it that well.

It's curious to note that neither the word nor the concept of the trinity appear in the bible.

Abrahim and I discussed this topic at length in the how to pray the Rosary thread. Have a look at that, it may help. God Bless.

The Trinity is the term employed to signify the central doctrine of the Christian religion -- the truth that in the unity of the Godhead there are Three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, these Three Persons being truly distinct one from another. Thus, in the words of the Athanasian Creed: "the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and yet there are not three Gods but one God."
And there was me thinking 1+1+1 = 3

I hope I can help with this.
In regards to the triune Godhead - or the Catholic "Trinity" of Father, Son and Holy Spirit/Ghost I think the easiest way to grasp this is to think of it in terms of authority.
They are 3 seperate entities for lack of a better word. Jesus is God incarnate on earth in human form. The Holy Spirit is a manifestation of "heavenly" power. The "great counseler" is here with us and in those of us who claim Jesus as a savior.
It is by that power we are able to conjur the words as "Jesus is Lord" - without the Holy Spirit we can not say that statement without having our conscience seared. Try and say it -
So even though we have A God, the Father of all created things and all the rules and laws of the universe, His Son who He sent to bridge the chasm between us and Him and His Holy Spirit which He sent to help guide us along "the path" All seperate things but with the same authority.
There are some who claim the perfect number of 777 is the symbol of the "trinity". This is in contrast to the number of man - 666. Where imperfection tries to overrule perfection. The number 666 has been said to symbolize The devil, the antichrist and the antichrist spirit - don't be confused about the word "anti" as in this case I belive it's intended definition is "a replacement of, or a counterfit".
Sorry for the long post but to sum this up - to know Jesus is to know God by spirit through His Spirit. All have the authority to perform the powers and miracles of heaven. Keeping in mind that there is a mirror of this truth always trying to decieve us by telling us all kinds of lies and misleading false "gospels" counter to the original.
In the end is the conflict between man and God. Which is how we want to replace the inconvienient circumstance of living opposed to His rules for our own rules and false circumstance. What do I mean?
Abortion in some cases - is a prime example.
A couple fornicate or commit adultry outside of God's plan. Guilt ensues or worse yet - the hardening of heart occurs and the conceived life is destroyed. Not once in all of this can we erase the consequence and say it is a good thing when deep in the heart is where the truth hurts the most. But, we try and pacifiy our pains and say "since it is legal by the government my conscience is clear." which today it may be but, I guarantee it will haunt us. Please stop killing babies.
All this from the trinity - what an inspiration.

Read up on "Sola Scriptura", the foundation of Protestantism versus the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox use of "Sacred Tradition".
I was raised Protestant with no teachings of the trinity, but lately I have run across it in other Protestant churches.

The whole father son and holy spirit thing could all just be imagery. Think of a tornado. It seems to be an individual entity. But really it is just wind. Just air. Jesus was just God. No religious person taught me that so don't accept that as a valid explanation. haha
That triforce comment should have been /thread.

Not true, one was already meantioned - being baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Another example is found in the KJM in 1 John 5:6-8;
This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
8And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. "
The reference to "the Word" is referenced in John 1 and studies out to be Jesus later on.
" 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"
John 1:14 - 14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
The scripture continues on and you eventually see that it is clearly talking about Jesus.
However, to cast doubts, the NIV challenges the KJV account by saying that scripture doesn't occur in the original Greek text and was added during the 16th century KJV translation.
But that doesn't disqualify the many other references to the Holy Spirit, Jesus and God being as one in the same God-head.
