View Full Version : What religion would you pick?

This is for all you atheists, agnostics and multi-religious people.
Let's say you had to pick a religion to stick to for the rest of your life. You'd have to follow any tenets, holidays, traditions and all the crap that comes with it. You'd have to be an active member of the religion, for example, should you pick catholicism, you'd have to go to church every Sunday, follow the commandments strictly and all that. You'd also have to at least pretend that you believe in the religion you pick.
What would you pick?
Atheism and agnosticism are beliefs and not religions, and there will be no discussion on that matter in this thread.
Personally, I'd probably follow the Necronomicon, just because it seems fun. That may be a stupid choice with a stupid reason, but that suits me well, as I'm a stupid person.

pnly one i can think of would be lavey satanism, but the not stealing part would be difucult, and keeping opinions to myself unless asked
death of a nation... thank you. you provided the closed-minded stupidity that I needed to make it through another day.
thank you in advancce to any of you idiots that run to his defense... God bless you, every one.
Pastafarism.
Pasta, Pirates, every Fridays a holiday, and flimsy moral standers, hard to top that.
Buddhism. If that isn't enough of a religion for you, how about Zoroastrianism?

Hinduism is actually my favorite religion, but I noticed something: why is it never spoken about? All that is spoken about here is Christianity and occasionally Islam, Buddhism, and Satanism.
Hinduism has to be the most liberating, free, peaceful religion I've read about and I quite like it's pantheistic viewpoints.

There is a cult of them from which the word "thug" comes from that have made over 1 million human sacrifices. That sounds peaceful to me.

Eristianism.
The first religion I knew of that actually admitted to being an elaborate joke.
Or Wicca.
Or LaVey Satanism.
Zen Buddhism.
Three-way tie for second place :P

Considering the Necronomicon, as Lovecraft envisioned it, doesn't exist....
I personally loathe Wicca and all that New Agey stuff, I'd go for something like Hinduism, its slightly newer cousin Buddhism, or an Orthodox Christianity. Their churches are the prettiest, and at least at all the big Greek Orthodox events everyone stuffs themselves with all kinds of delicious foods.
Taoism, or Shaolin, would also be up there on the 'could tolerate' list.

What's wrong with Wicca? Not that I know much about it...
Must agree on the pretty churches point. I'm not to keen on the good vs evil thing though, which is part of why I picked Discordian. It was developed in the 50's so it's not that new anymore. It's still New-Agey though. Meh. No religion is perfect.
Hindu stories have a fairy-tale feel, but that's probably part of the point. Eh, I dunno.

Either Pastafarianism of Norse. Of all the gods in any mythology, I'd pick the Norse ones as the most awesome and therefore worthy of my respect. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

I used to really follow the Norse mythology, etc...I read every myth and tale and was into it...If I had to pick an established religion (other than pastafarianism), I would pick that one.

Wicca stole figures from extinct religions, assigned them incorrect roles and invented rituals to worship them. I've heard Wiccans babble on about worshipping both Zeus and Osiris.
I mean, the point is, just study the real religion and not the hackneyed one for hippies.
Also, Rastafarianism is a close-runner up to my list. You don't see many of them starting wars.

Bushido. More of a philosophy rather than a religion, but oh well.

If that's not Discordianism by a different name, then... DISCORDIANISM IS BETTER! :P
I was thinking Church of the Subgenius, but that would cost too much money. So I'll go with my pal Eris instead.

Think about the afterlife: as much mead and roast pork as a guy could want, battles against the inferior gods, and more valkyrie bitches than you can shake a stick at.

ha, the 'thuggee' were more of a mob than a cult. they did kill people (always with a garotte), but they killed to rob them, and had some rituals they did, mostly to instill fear.

Dammit! I was going to say that!
Okay, I guess I'll just stick with my Discordian Paganism.
Although, all things considered, the two beliefs could compliment each other rather well.

It was more like a secret society or cult, not "official" Hinduism. I don't know the actual statistics, but I really doubt it's 1,000,000... and there are indications that the "thuggees" were actually formed from the remnants of the Muslim Hashashin, not (originally) Hindus (Hindi? Hindis?).
So you can still go ahead and like Hinduism. http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif) Not that I know much about it... I'll have to look it up.
Personally, my favorites are
-Buddhism (peaceful and appealing)
-"Odinism"/Norse paganism (mead, mutton, and murder! http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif))
-Catholicism (I love the rituals)
Hinduism does sound appealing, though... hmm...

Shinto. They have cool shrines. Rockin' the animism.
Failing that, Mithraisim.
Are there any Dionysians left? There was a foreigner who could hold a party.
Christian atheism.
Basically they say you can do anything you want as god forgives you any sins you show remorse for at the last trial. I think everybody will truely regret their sins when -and if- the rest of their eternal life is based on them, so this is a flawless plan.
Edit: If you say this one doesn't count then I'll pick celtic mythology. Especially the war god will be pleased by my deeds ...
