"44 percent of Americans believe that Jesus will return to Earth within 50 years.

Despite a full century of scientific insights attesting to the antiquity of life and the greater antiquity of the Earth, more than half the American population believes that the entire cosmos was created 6,000 years ago. This is, incidentally, about a thousand years after the Sumerians invented glue. Those with the power to elect presidents and congressmen—and many who themselves get elected—believe that dinosaurs lived two by two upon Noah's Ark, that light from distant galaxies was created en route to the Earth and that the first members of our species were fashioned out of dirt and divine breath, in a garden with a talking snake, by the hand of an invisible God."

that's 44% believe the rapture is coming in 50 years, and half are young-earthers.

i wonder what percentage of that 44% support the war on terror as a way of bringing on armageddon?

The 6,000 years thing always makes me giggle because it was one fucking archbishops's (Archbishop Usher, that is) word that Genisis happened 6,000 years ago. His cosmic math was askew; he forgot to account for some begettings, the fact that God's time probably doesn't correspond with earth time as the fricken thing wasn't created at that point.

What's more, that means God gave up on his creation's goodness pretty quickly. I mean, just under 4,000 years and he's like, "Oh snap! Son! To earth!" to save our souls.

Yeah, Christians are fun kids. I do prefer the Jahovah's Witnesses, as they don't celebrate the pagan holidays the creators of which they hold such disdain for.

Hey, hey congressmen. You know who Santa really is? The Green Man, you know who the Green Man was also known as? The Horned One. You know where the idea of Satan with horns and a tail came from...?

I love how most of those people who are christians think everyone who doesn't believe is damned, and that they themselves are going to get into heaven. Even when the bible says, Matthew 7:14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

and,

Matthew 7: 21-23 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.'

'Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonder is Your name?'

'And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'

evangelists are taking over the US, inlcluding there government.

pretty scary if you ask me. and something need sto be done about it, but is it too late?

religion should be completly seperate from state, but in the US its not. In canada it is to a degree, since we did get gay marriage passed but the religious folk are constantly trying to get that debate going again, when people are saying shut the fuck up about it already

If there was no religion then medicine would be so much further ahead, stem cell research could have helped cure desieses and all those dumb ass people who think that the rapture is coming. actually in the evolution of the species, there's a corellation of religious artefacts and increasing brain size. neandetals used the same stone tools for millions of years, then at the same time as we find evidence of religion they start making different tools and getting bigger brains. deep religious beliefs are what makes us human, we don't need to get rid of religion we just need some better ones.

I wasn't even talking about religion per se. I was talking about how important it is for people to be able to imagine and believe in things that they don't completely understand or aren't positive exist. It's important for the evolution of the human race to have faith in the unknown.

But, I'm not surprised you didn't get it.

Yes, we would have. Physicists didn't say "oh, I bet there's quarks and stuff inside an atom!" They never believed in anything they didn't understand. They looked first. They were logical. They didn't have faith in the existance of quarks and electrons. We didn't get to the moon by blind faith, we got to the moon by carefully cataloging new facts, extrapolating from what we knew, experimenting, and working hard.

Belief in things for which there is no evidence is not conducive to scientific progress.

Imagination is fine. Belief in what is clearly imaginary, however, is not.

Faith in the unknown? What exactly are you having faith in? That it's unknown? That's not what religious people do at all, and before you say you weren't talking about religious people note that you were thanking goodness for the religious people mentioned in the topic post.

The religious actually believe there is no unknown; they have it all figured out. That's not conducive to the pursuit of knowledge.

There are lots of things that aren't known for a fact that people believe in. They don't know it, they believe it.

That's not what religious people do at all

I can't vouche for all religious people, but believing in god is what most religious people do. They don't say "I know god exists" (well some do, but they're ignorant), they say "I believe god exists." Big difference.

thanking goodness for the religious people mentioned in the topic post.

No. I said "thank good some people still believe in somethings they can't understand." Nowhere in that statement is there the mention of religious people, god, or spiritual faith at all.

Oh yes, the great wise LostCause. Gravity is magnetic, indeed... and you never admitted you were wrong.

We would not have gravity on the planet if it were not for the magnetic pull of the solar system. Prove to me I'm wrong and I'll gladly admit it. I like to learn new things.

What?

I thought gravity was a simple relationship between the mass and distance between two particles that creates an apparent attractive force between them. Similar to magnetism, but also very similar (math-wise) to electrical attraction.

How does the magnetic forces in the solar system create gravity on Earth? That doesn't even make sense as magnetic forces will be relative to the center of the solar system, not the center of the Earth. Wouldn't that make gravity sideways some places on the planet? http://www.totse.com/bbs/eek.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/eek.gif)

corellation doesn't equal causation.

The most likely, and most widely accepted scenario is that better tools, led to more free time to think, resulting in increased brain size and the ability to invent religion.
