Nihilism is the concept of belief in nothing. It, in itself, like all ideologies, offers nothing to society instinctively, but through its application is able to influence society.
Nihilists can be just as good as anyone else, and just as bad.
And contrary to popular belief, Nietzsche didn't propose Nihilism, he suggested it was something that needed to be overcome.

They are generally anything that is the negation of a positive (by positive, I don't mean 'good') statement, so generally you can say most of them are atheists, amoral, etc. etc.
After becoming an atheist, I got really Nihilistic for awhile, but then I discovered Nietzsche and Existentialism and they helped get me out of a funk.

Nihilism shouldn't be a philosophy you should live your entire life by. But it's a good bullshit detector and a good place to start. Once you realize everything purported to be "the meaning of life" is complete shit, you can then begin to find out what really matters.
There's a lot of good articles on the American Nihilist Underground Society. www.anus.com (http://www.anus.com)
