View Full Version : All sins are equal in the eyes of God.

I have been told that all sins are equal in the eyes of the Christian god, with the exception of cursing the name of the holy spirit, which is seen as the ultimate sin and for which there is no forgiveness.

Is this in the scripture anywhere? Because if it is, don’t you think it’s kind of strange that in the eyes of God, having sex before marriage equals Hitler having Jewish people murdered because of their race?

And also, according to this, sexually molesting a little girl is less evil than cursing the name of the holy spirit. Don’t you think that that's a little egomaniacal on god’s behalf?

Are all sins equal in the eyes of God? It depends on who's doing the interpreting.

If that's true then I'm really fucked.

Fuck God.

I'll be back with Scripture later, but I'll answer what I can off the top of my head now.

I don't think it means that all sins are equal in that someone who steals a loaf of bread will recieve the same punishment as Hitler. But in Gods eyes a sin is a sin no matter what it is.

... That's not quite clear... I can't think how to clear it up s I'll move on...

If we imagine that all sins are the same, but that it is harder to repent for one sin thatn it is another.

To use the example of a child molester, they will find it far harder to repent. They will have probaly enjoyed what they did, they may recognise the wrong in it , but is is hard for them to repent.

To use a mundane example, let's say you are on a diet. You are supposed to eat only what you are supposed to eat according to your diet yet one day you eat a block of chocolate. You know that you shouldn't have so you exercise for a few minutes and bang, the probelm with eating the chocolate is gone.

Then imagine that instead you spend the weekend eating and drinking, you put on a bit of weight. You feel guilty, do the exercise for a few days and you're back on track, you've worked off the excess weight.

Now imagine that you simply never exercise, you gorge yourself all day and night , and eventually you're so fat you simply can't move at all.

This is a simplified version of some of the ways I imagine sin to exist. In this case no matter what you do you are putting on weight , you are breaking the diet, and you have to work out to get back on track. But in this case working out is proportional to the amount of weight put on.

I also think that the view that cursing the name of the Holy Spirit is wrong comes not from unbelief in god, but from trying to push others away from God. Tonight I'll copy a part that to me seems to justify not believing in god. I think it is when someone disbelieves in god so much that they try to turn others against him, to do Bad.

It is, I feel, far worse to drive someone else to sin to do bad than it is to sin and do bad yourself. If you personally sin, even if you murder a thousand people, you alone are responsible, however if you convince others to sin, to kill thousands for you you are commiting a far greater sin. In this way Hitler has commited a worse sin than just being anti-semetic, worse than murder,Hitler drove and justified killing and sin.

I'm sorry for the length.... Just a boring lunchtime with nothing to do.

I'll come back later with some scripture support... Hopefully.
