If there was no religion, thee would be no religious wars. There would be no Muslim terrorists, they'd just be terrorists. If we abolish all religions and just set down the basic morals in law, then life would be bearable for everyone.
As good as that sounds I am afraid to see the fundies who claim that there morals are derived solely from the bible have there religion striped away.
Ignoring the other obvious problems.

"Without religion good people do good things and bad people do bad things...but it takes religion to make good people do bad things"
Id rather live in a world where religious doctrine isn't so engraved in how our lives are run, A LOT of wars are started solely on the basis of religion, we aren't saying there wont be any more wars, but there sure as hell wont be the ones started by religion.

I love how the Huns and the Mongols just ravaged entire civilizations. Scariest atheists ever. They weren't evil either.

Stop ragging on the mongols man, they raped so many people it just made everything all right.
The OP is right, except you can't force people to abandon their faith, it just doesn't work. Its persecution. Also, athiests are a minority. Hopefully overtime it will gradually get better.

Not 100% true. The Mongols were Buddhists(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol) and The huns had a religion just much is known about it(http://www.bookrags.com/Huns).

I'd love a world without religion. Its impossible to say how history would have turned out if there was none right from the start. But if today all religion disapeared it would be a better world

To actually abolish religion, you would have to change billions of peoples ideas and this is something that could never be done. You would have to prove all religions are wrong and even if you did im pretty sure there would still be people who would stay true to their beliefs.
I don't think the world would be in perfect harmony, but many problems could be solved and many conflicts ended.
This, of course, is something that I believe, could never be done.

I believe that it could be done, and MUST be done for the future of mankind, but as someone else already said, it will be necessary to definitively prove all religions wrong in a VERY public way, i.e. by world leaders on worldwide live TV.
I strongly support this idea.

I thought about this
I don't think religion should be abolished I wish society would evolve past it.
People aren't morally/mentally strong enough to survive without thinking that there's a higher power out there to guide/control/judge them.
Yeah.
Fuck those Buddhists who wouldn't harm anyone. And screw those goddamn Native American Spiritualists who pretty much keep to themselves. And the Pagans, them and their occasional rituals that do nothing to anyone. Not to mention the Hindus, Christians, Muslims, and Jews that are majorly good people. Let's just overlook the fact that the point of any major world religion is to make the world a better place.
Yes, let's interfere with the majority of people's pursuit of happiness just for the sake of a few extremists with power than balls.
You douche.
IT CANT BE DONE.
Lets just imagine that some way in hell you manage to abolish all religion, and everyone is an athiest. People would develope differing ideas, and eventually there would be war, thus defeating the point of it in the first place, and finally, after many generations maybe, those ideas would grow so radical that new religions would emerge out of them. "Prophets" would probably start to appear. Religion is more of a projection of the human unconscience than anything else. People want hope beyond the shit world we live in today.

People in the end are usually (insert religion) traditionalists.
They dot actually believe all the shit, they just follow the tradition.
We need something to replace these, traditional events that humans feel a need to celebrate and find a religious meaning in it, birth, death, wedding, funeral and such.

would the human race be better off without tradiation? without feeling the need to hold on to old things, like old 200 year old houses being protected, antiques being sold for a million dollars with no function at all , ect.etc.
personally i think if human nature didnt include holding on to tradition we would be better off. Its a tough debate though. Is teaching your children considered tradition or nature? Are are natural morals Tradition because they've kept us civilized in the past or is it nature?

Religion isn't the cause of all the shit that aflicts humanity, if anything religion is the product of it.
Religion has done good things for mankind, as well as huge evil. I don't think anyone should have the power to dictate beliefs over others, but I guess I would welcome a world where people are more rational, and spiritual, and can work together to achieve our huge potential.
But that's got fuck owt to do with abolishing religion, not to mention group beliefs, traditions and worship are one of the oldest forms of human interactions, i'll bet...
Bout as futile as a war on drugs, i'm afraid http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif)
