Satanism has always struck me as silly and pretentious. As do most other organized religions.

And if you define a Satanist as one who acknowledges the power of Satan (a being which does not even exist in my reality) and fears him, then most Christians are also Satanists.

He's talking about LaVey Satanism, which doesn't really even proclaim the existence of the devil.

I find LaVey Satanism to be just rediculous. It's a philosophy of selfishness, even worse than those damned nihilists. Christianity, even with its myriad of faults, is preferable to that bullshit religion.

Satanists are just dumb/weird/attention whores, it's devil worshippers that creep me the fuck out.

They outgrow it in their thirties. Sadly, the same cannot be said of Christians, Judaists, and Scientologists, etc. etc. etc.

I have spent the past eleven years of my life studying various occult practices, doctrines, and organizations, and in my studies, i have come across no movement i hate more than the Church of Satan. First of all, as far as i can tell, Anton was and all his followers are merely post highschool students who never grew out of their inferiority complex, and to compensate, aim to shock. Where as ASL's (anton szander lavey's) take on satanism does not acknowledge satan, one must ask, why did he call it satanism? The Satanic Bible says that it is because it stands in direct opposition to everything the church stands for. Okay, but why satan, when their were plenty of greek and roman gods who held the same ideals put forth by your doctrine, why not call it the church of bacchus? Simple, it wouldn't offend nearly as many people. Further, most of the "bible" was a plagarization. The Book of Satan was not written by LaVey, but was, in fact, a book called Might is Right which was published in the 1800's. The nine satanic statements are a paraphrasing of the basis of Objectivism as laid out by Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged, with a ninth statement thrown in "the devil is the best friend the church has ever had as he has kept the church in business all these years" again with the shock factor. The enochian keys were taken from Crowley's equinox. Also, there are police documents detailing both ASL's abusing of his family and neglect of his animals, two actions he specifically condemned within the bible (the portion that he actuall wrote). If i have upset any satanists, good, when someone is upset, they think, and i only hope you think about either the validity or flaws of your doctrine, instead of petty thoughts of how much you want to kick my ass.

You have to pay a $200 USD entry fee to be a member of the church.

A distant look at satanism, the idea of viewing yourself as your own god and in control of your own life is nice, but you can do that with a humanistic psychological view, or a philosophical view, or even taoism.

I think they define it as worshipping Satan, and believing he will win the final battle. Part of it, in my opnion is just people who follow their desires too much. Basically a mirror image of what most of society is.

I'm not a real student of religion and think it is just too narrow and confining of God. However, aren't the Abrahamic religions the only ones that believe in Satan? If you believe in Satan then don't you also have to believe in Christianity/Judaism/Islam? Don't you have to believe in Heaven and Hell? My youngest daughter once got into Satanism. I didn't berate her or "raise hell" about it. I laughed at her. After explaining my views on God, the universe, and the restrictions being human puts on our capability to understand anything, she quickly went on to something else.

While traditional satanists do, in fact, worship satan, the LaVey variety do not acknowledge such an entity as an actual being, but as an archetype.

LaVey was a con man, plain and simple. He sold bullshit to angry young rich kids and made his mark, and probably plenty of money.

I actually admire people like Anton LaVey and L Ron Hubbard for having the bulls to do what they did and to actually pull it off, I still find them to be despicable characters, however.

And really, the satanic bible is "The Ego and Its Own" for idiots.
