View Full Version : Is there anything in the Bible that directly condemns abortion or stem-cell research?

I need to defend the anti-abortion/anti-stem cell side for school. I'm wondering if there are any passages that prove this. Quotes are apreciated. Alsok, I'm refering to the type of stem-cell research that destroys an embryo, and I'm aware of adult stem cell research.

There are actually passages that say a baby can't be considered an actual human until they draw their first breath. Let me look for it. Here's something that's pretty interesting, though. Maybe you can do something with it.

EDIT: Well, I found it, but it's too open to interpretation to be of much use in a debate. "And if men struggle and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise."

Exodus 21:22-25

There is no direct commandment like 'Thou shalt not perform an abortion' but this site lists the verses commonly used to explain the biblical pro life lobby's stance. http://www.godandscience.org/doctrine/prolife.html

Pope Innocent III pardoned a monk who performed an abortion from punishment and declared it nonsinful. St. Augistine also condoned the practice.

"Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. "

Those are 3 of the ten commandments.

Thats not a bible passage though

There is nothing in there i don't think, fundamentalists believe that the soul enters you at the very moment of conception.

AN embryo used for stem cell research contains 150 random cells, they don't make up anything remotely like a human.

Yeah those bible fanatics that say you're a human the instant you're born are just being stubborn

Let's cut the shit for a second... really...

until you're like 2 or 3 even you are pretty much as useless as a sack of potatoes (unless you're gonna eat em)

During research for my paper (I'm handeling the ethical side of stem cell research), I discovered that Hinduism has a very concrete anti-abortion/embryonic stem cell research position. It's in their 8 Laws or something; I need to do more research on that and find the Hindu holy text.

I realise this isn't totally relevant, but River from Firefly says the main message of the bible is "There's no need to be afraid, ever".

I know it's only a show but I believe in that message.
