Although the basis of government in America was designed to be secular, I don't think that you can say it is currently still based on that ideal.

God can neither be proven or disproven fully. Therefore anyone who insults theism or atheism is a complete moron. Atheists need to stop crying about how God gave their mom cancer, and theists need to start learning to think for themselves and follow a logical argument.

A good number of the threads I've seen in this forum are like this. Just places to throw around long-winded insults. Given there is some intelligent conversations going on, but then they become ruined by people like the OP here. It's kind of disappointing.

I've been reading this forum recently, lurking if you will, and I've come to realize half of the posters in (if not more) are actually less than 13 years old. They come in here, with their athiest promotion and "fuck yea! god is dead!" attitude, with nothing actually to say. The reason I come to these forums is to escape from the mindless trolls of Spurious Generalities or Half Baked, and it's exactly the same. I do have to agree with 1217 here, people need to shut the fuck up most of the time, athiests in this case, and don't blame God. That's just being a hypocrite. You say you don't believe in God, yet you blame him for everything. Thiests, shut the fuck up and think for yourselves.

Whether or not you believe God is consequential to life in some manner. But that doesn't mean people can't follow a belief. I would be willing to bet, from your spelling and grammar alone that your a little teenage bitch. You don't know enough of life to have any beliefs. Come back in 10 years when you've dealt with life, instead of following the newest fad from MTV. The rest of you, whatever. And just to add, no I don't believe in any specific God, but I'm not going to be a dick about it.

but to contribute to this i would like to point out that yes religion is quite restrictive and is the cause of a lot of evils, but look at what non religious people did:

hitler: killed 6 million jews

stalin: killed 22 million of is countrymen by forced starvation and paranoid purges

mao: killed 30 million through his economic policy.

and thats not even counting the wars that they contributed to.

also religion is the basis of the West's legal system.

eg. it is wrong to kill? why is that? because its just plain wrong, even though in nature animals kill every day. why dont we go about killing people that piss us off? we have morals, which as its foot firmly placed in religion.



although i am not religious, religion is vitally important to our society and has helped us to advance.

the pyramids could not have been built without it, so couldnt industrialisation, and the renaissance. humanity became civilised because we had religions.

look at it this way. humans have been living for what, 2 million years max. where was the first civilisation? sumer and the indus valley, they had a much higher religious influence than the surrounding tribes. they were the origins of medicine, mathematics, agriculture, science etc

Actually only %3 of the USA population is an atheist.

In all probability, god exists.

But he's obviously not present, not apparent, which causes a big conundrum for a lot of people.

Do I believe in him? No, I can only believe in things I'm sure about.

Do I believe he probably exists, sure.

Do I know for a fact? No. I'm without knowledge (a-gnostic; without, knowledge)

So if we can never find out whether God exists or not, what the hell is the point of religion?

Religion serves two purposes. It either helps you live, or it helps you die. Personally, I don't need an established religion to do either.

I am so enchanted with life and existence and the ramifications thereof that I have created my own personal system of belief and action which suffices my needs. Kind of existentialist. I pride myself in free choice and the intrinsic value of life. This gratifies me in that I can create my own meaning. My life is FULL of meaning and I enjoy it everyday. Why does it mean so much? Why is there so much value?

Because I said so.

Or you can join a religion and let them do it for you.
