View Full Version : Biblical contradictions explained

Back in June of last year, Milk and Innards posted a rather long list of Biblical contradictions (from EvilBible.com).
Many of the most obvious ones stem from the fact that Judaism is an evolved religion. The early, rather primitive Jews worshipped fire, as did many other tribes. They invented a fire god, called him Jehovah. This is the fire and brimstone, jealous, mean, cruel deity portrayed in much of the OT, especially Exodus. (Remember Moses and the burning bush?)
Later, a more loving deity revealed himself (her/it/them/whatever--deity transcends gender)), and was known as Elohim. This is the equivalent of the Wiccan's male side of the goddess, the Native American's Great Spirit, and what some modern folks refer to as the Unified Field of Consciousness.
In general, OT references to an angry and vengeful god refer to Jehovah, not Elohim.

Although I doubt the historical origins of the Bible you post are accurate (Cite?), this doesn't even begin to explain the majority of contradictions in the bible, as your thread title suggests.

Point taken.
However, to title the thread "A few of the most egregious and absurd contradictions in the Old Testament partially explained" seemed a tad awkward.

Your post simply makes it harder for me to buy into the religion.

Lol I completely forgot I posted that.
And yeah it was a stupid post. I was rather new to &T and felt like starting a thread

I read on some Jewish website a while ago that 'Yahweh' or 'YHWH' is a more accurate interpretation of God's name than Jehovah.

I don't understand how religion can evolve like that if it is thought to be true. Shouldn't everything remain constant, save for obvious changes like the coming of the messiah, because God is constant? You can't change the damn rules in the middle of the game.

Uh, how can you not understand that people manipulate religious writings for their own purposes...?

I meant if you are to actually believe in the shit.
And Sentinel, God is supposed to be constant and unchanging. He doesn't make mistakes, therefore there would be no reason to add or change the rules after the creation of the universe. That's what I don't get.

Just because man's perception might change how does that imply that God changes?

I am kinda of an athiest/agnostic myself but about these changes in god's personna and story...
When I was a believer I always held the impression god let man (the jews) do as they pleased and let them learn from their mistakes by his direction. In other words he always gave humanity the benefit of a doubt despite knowing they would dissapoint.
But what do I know? There are a lot of things in the OT that I have problems with. Unless god himself introduces himself in some supernatural way I will always be a "doubting thomas"...

you still aren't understanding what i'm saying.
i don't follow any religion. one reason is that i see how, christian religions for example, have changed and added things over time that seemingly do not come directly from "god." to me, this does not make sense if you are to believe.
