View Full Version : Why in the FUCK do people take everything they hear about the bible literally?

Through media, through their pastors or whatever. . . I've always wondered; Does anyBODY out there actually read the text ?

For example;

I've encountered hundreds of christians who are against homosexuality. A real interesting case actually that I heard about in incredulation; a woman who is catholic and later "converted" to pentecostal stopped talking to her best friend who turned out to decide she was bisexual.

She has known this woman for 13 straight years and they were closer than sisters but because of this little stupid technicality concerning her friend's sexuality; she breaks off all contact, moves town and basically cuts this other woman out of her life.

I know the bisexual woman personally; she's shattered and completely "WTF" over this person's reaction.

It upsets me because I can't help but wonder if there is anyone left in the world who sees the bible as it is; a story full of parables and metaphors that people choose to worship because it helps them through and explain their lives around them. It comforts; it shouldn't control.

Ive always thought of people (catholics for example) who call themselves christian are blasphemous when they react in similar ways of fanaticalism to demeritting their lives in the name of christ, god and the bible.

I don't know where people are getting the idea they can justify anything by saying that "Its in the bible, cause jesus did so, cause god said so and it was so.."

So my question is; What is the future of christianity and the modern world at the possible rate that everyone is turning into vegetables

because

they are

turning into those

who listen but do not hear, who look but do not see, who talk but have no idea what they are saying?

I'm not sure if all of it is metaphors and parables, but for the most part, you have a point. That was a pretty misguided thing for her to do.

Well of course, not ALL parables and metaphors - nothing is ever everything if it is belonging to a piece of something then it has to be a segment of at least a bit of everything.

*blinks*

Not sure where the hell I came up with that. . . or even if it made sense

Anyway, thanks for the reply and you're right completely in your own opinion.

I see the bible as a guide and I try to have a personal relationship with god and jesus (if that makes sense). I don't like going to church and listening to being told what "God says/said" but on occasion I go and I sit and I pray and converse in that way .. well you know what I'm talking about, undoubtably you've felt it before.

What i mean is I believe in the;

Unexplainable presence that guides you, really is all around you but more predominat is your connection to it in the presence of a church.

Or something along those lines, I'm not sure how to explain it without offending someone

no that did not make sense, but i would like to add my things anyway.

ok, i reckon that the bible is more or less a book of fables (its truth is debatable, but that doesnt matter for now). it has stories, morals and its sort of like a guide for the followers.

but like all morals, values change over time, and about 2000 since christ was born, the bible has pretty much remained the same.

this is where the flaw is. values change. maybe at that time the schizophrenic were possessed, because we live in a more informed world, our understanding changes, and we no longer see things this way, but some things never change.

homo/bisexuality is a way of life for a lot of people and the bible has to adapt to modern society.

like an amendment to a constitution

Christianity--and the other Abrahamic religions--are artifacts of the Piscean Age, and are on their way out.

2 Samuel 1:26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

whats even more fucked up is on 1 page the bible ses that homosexuality is wrong and a sin. Then in the next chapter it ses children should be stoned to death for disobedience.

Why do these people feel they have the right to follow on a select few rules layed out by god, its pretty fucked up. And only strengthens the idea off how retarded these people who take the bible as fact really are. I'm all for other people using the bible as a story, for guidence or whatever. But dont pull the it all really happend bullshit

Eh, the bible is full of shit anyways... For example, it is impossible for one ship to hold all the animals in the world... So a fundamental part of the Christan faith is bullshit, and IF their was a flood, then Noah could only take so many species correct? Then how did we get the rest? It would only prove Macro-Evolution...

Consider it a lack of creativity, and intuitive understanding on the readers part, as well as a lack of independence so that they require a large group to belong and feel safe to, ensuring that they are correct. Simply because there's a large group, not because what they believe in makes any sense.

As for those who "don't" believe in the bible, because they can take it literally, well, they're just like the believers.

Since when is Gods word open to subjective interpretation?? If it is then who is right and who is wrong?? Some people will goto hell for following the Bible literally. Why would a benevolent God trick us in such a way?

Why is it that everything any christian says just makes me more and more happy being an atheist.
