How can we know for certain that Jesus wasn't just some regular guy who was out of his mind and went on rants? Surely if in this day and age someone were to say to us he was the son of God, we would lock him up. What made him so believable?

People were stupid back then.

What about the "miracles"? Sometimes I swear that Jesus was really badass when it came to tricking people. Like switching around water and wine jugs, or telling people to turn around and then dumping a pile of fish unto the floor. Walking over really big puddles, etc. But then again, he did have some prophecies which make sense. Oh and that shroud. There are some really mysterious things surrounding it. Like how it can't be destroyed.

Its true, For all we know he was skitsophrenic. And his "miracles" were just people that believed his story spreading rumors.

Some gullible person believes him. Then tells another person on the street something like I bet he could even turn water into wine, then we could get drunk everyday for free. Then that person tells the story to another person, then somewhere down the line its not I bet, its he does. We see this today with rumours and stories all the time.

How do you know that Thomas Paine, George Washington, or Adam Smith weren't just rambling lunatics? I follow the Prophet Jesus's, (peace be upon him), teachings because they make sense.

He performed miracles, and also when he died the veil in the temple was ripped from top to bottom.

There is a short novel about this subject that (apart from the time travelling) I think provides a pretty good explanation for how the myth of Jesus could develop.

It's called 'Behold the Man' if anyone is interested.

Jesus gave sight to the blind, he rose a man from the dead, and fed 40 people with only a handful of fish and a few loafs of bread, and he rose from the dead, now you try to do that.

Who hasn't wandered off into the desert and come back weeks later yelling "I'm the son of God!"?

And how come all these spiritual leaders and messiahs came along so long ago when people were kind of, well, dumb.

Because now days science would shut such people up. And you watch too much south park.

I think you people are all neglecting the fact that people are still to this day claiming to be the son of god or choosen by god. Manson is in jail today. Science doesn't shut anyone up. There is an entire field of christians dedicated to making up scientific connections to god.

The scriptures were written years after Jesus died, and among the four accepted gospels (there are many others, equally authoritative) there are many contradictions. One even strongly implies--when you read it in the original Greek--that Jesus did NOT die on the cross.

Some Biblical scholars contend that the "cast the first stone" incident never happened, after closely reading the original text, which appears to have been altered.

To me, the best guide is to listen to the wisdom of the heart. If a saying or deed attributed to Jesus resonates with you and serves to foster your being the highest, grandest, and greatest conception off yourself, go for it.

For me, one is when he said "All these thing I have done, ye shall do also--all these and more." Also--"the kingdom of God is within you," and "seek first the kingdom of Heaven; then all else shall be given unto thee."

Because there's a wealth of paintings, letters, and documents left behind, also, they didn't exactly claim to be the son of God, perform miracles, or rip off other people's religious stories.

All we have for Jesus are a few Gnostic texts and the Four Gospels, written after Jesus's "life" which, by the way, were not written by the people who you'd think had written them (Mark, Luke, John, Mathew) according to scholars.

Exactly, because you came to that conclusion on your OWN. So, if you can do that, why do you need God or Jesus in the first place?

Yes. Care to explain why you had such a misleading name as "I_am_god"?

The amount of athiests on these forums is astonishing, but not suprising ether, as the number of humans falling away from god increase every day. What made jesus so believable, was simple his will power, and miracles that he preformed regularly. For jesus was the son of god, god in the flesh, he had a pure personality, and made a great leader, how could one not love him?

The reason atheists are "falling away from God" is because they're waking up and realizing Judaism and Christianity are nothing but a bunch of illogical, Jewish folktales.

IMO, due to the rise of the internet, ushering in the information age at its finest, disseminating solid arguments and rational thinking that allows people to see things from new perspectives.

If you read the about page, that was why this site was founded in the first place.

In our generation, I doubt that religion will still be determined by that of your parents 97% of the time, and I think that's a good thing.
