I think this is one thing we can all agree on:

absurd:

1. Ridiculously incongruous or unreasonable.

2. Of, relating to, or manifesting the view that there is no order or value in human life or in the universe.

3. Of or relating to absurdism or the absurd.

I've never really gotten Nihilism. So what if there is no meaning "out there" and so what if the meaning you create for your life is temporary and goes with you. Nihilism is too defeatist for me.

I guess you could say it's absurd, but then... why would a nihilist believe in the absurd?

It's surrendering into a life of no faith in anything. I used to support it, now I find it obscene.

"Nihilists generally assert some or all of the following: there is no reasonable proof of the existence of a higher ruler or creator, a "true morality" is unknown, and secular ethics are impossible; therefore, life has no truth, and no action is known to be preferable to any other."

I agree with the bolded items, but not the others. So, I guess I'm part nihilist. http://www.totse.com/bbs/confused.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/confused.gif)

Nihilism takes away any moral dogma. It is believed killing is wrong, nihilists will ask "why?!" and refuse to accept it without some sort of proof. It's extreme doubt in everything.

But the main flaw in nihilism is that humans do not function without some sort of emotion, and cannot see outside that emotion. This has led to the nihilist belief that all decisions are arbitrary. But funnily, doubting your own emotion and mind means doubting your decision to doubt your own emotion and mind (this is what made me agnostic). It lacks direction, which is fine. But for the emotional, faith driven machine that humans are...it doesn't really work.

I guess humans tend to take things a little too far in a lot of cases.

The main points of nihilism where there is no higher being, no "true" morality and ultimately existence is without point are what i would subscribe to.

On the other hand however, it seems to me humans create a "morality" which is open to everyone for the harmony of society and for humans beings to cooperate with one another, so saying "killing is wrong" has only come about because it is unproductive to our species to go around killing one another, where as it seems to me in other species this "moral" viewpoint is absent.

The further points of Nihilism which have been taken to amazing extremes i dont however like.

There is no value or reason to human life. It is pointless. This much of nihilism I can agree with, but like Hare_Geist said, "it's too defeatist for me". I'm only going to be here for a short time, and I'm sure as hell not going to waste it believing in nothing.

I concur.

I even wrote a song about this.

It's called " I Give A Fuck (but only a little bit)" Copyright 2006 Thomas Mason.

I agree with this. Emotion and life are inseparable, which is why nihilism IS absurd. It's somewhat of an anarchy of philosophical thought.

emotions are not magical though. emotions are easy. emotions are not artificial, but they are tangible. things can be done to the brain to create emotions.

emotions exist. there is no reason to they should be imcompatible with nihlsm.
