View Full Version : A prayer for the class?

So my religion teacher is making me recite a prayer for the whole class, it literally can be anything, quotes from the bible/other people, my personal feelings etc. etc.

I am an Atheist, can be a bit Agnostic sometimes, the whole damn class apart from me is religious in some way, it kinda disturbs me so I want to find something to quote, prefferably from the bible which will be meaningful and could just make them think about not beliveing everything thats said in the bible. It can't be too offensive otherwise I'll get kicked of the class and possibly the school because this IS a Catholic school.

So any contributions will be most welcome. I will try and do some research of my own but I'm kida short on time lately.

Thanks in advance.

Try a few of these. It's my own list of bible passages that make me vomit with shame. Some are just the passage name (exodus 3:15, of something like that) with a short explanation of what they say. Others are direct quotes. Have fun!

exodus 31:15 Kill those who work on the sabbath

psalm 19:7 the law of the lord is perfect

deut 13:13 destroy non believers

lev 24:16 death to blasphemers

1 corinthians 14 Women must stay silent in church

1 tim 2 Women can't teach or have authority over men (This one is great if your teacher is a female)

titus 2:9 slaves must be loyal to their master

Psalm 119

160 All your words are true;

all your righteous laws are eternal.

Christians can't associate with non-believers

2 Corinthians 6

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

at the start of this a priest or whatever ses a prayer about how there all trying to find the truth. The meeting at the university is ken miller showing how intelligent design is bullshit.

How biased is your class? Do they actually teach you lots about other religions?

I think you should look up the passage in the new testament (its in one of the gospels, though i cant remember which one), where jesus explicitley states that God doest care whether you go to church or not, or do any other meaningless rituals. God only cares about you helping others, and leading a good life.

If you are quoting the Bible then don't worry about how offensive it is. As a matter of fact, go for the most offensive possible. I don't see a Catholic school being able to find ground for expulsion for quoting the book they live by.

Leviticus 20:9

If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.

Run Pre-teens, RUN!

Deuteronomy 22:20-1 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house.

What if she's just outside her father's house?

When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations . . . then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy.

Use this one in the playground.

There are lots.

You're thinking about the Gospel of Thomas, which wasn't included in the Bible by the early church for obvious reasons.

That is some serious bullshit your school is pulling, Conflict of Harmony. Maybe they have the legal right, but it's still wrong as hell to force people to participate in their religion.

In my opinion, whenever it comes to people personal beliefs, no matter how much you don't agree, it's best to be as tastefull and respectfull as possible. Hopefully they will do the same. They don't always though, but just because everyone else is an asshole doesn't mean you have to be, too.

If your teacher wont let you forefeit the assignment I would just pick something generic, recite it, and sit back down. Don't try to make it personal. I mean, if you don't even believe in it all you would do by making it personal is broadcasting your intolerance and making everyone, including yourself, uncomfortable.

Cheers,

Lost

That's right, be a good little boy, don't risk accidentally making people think. We wouldn't want that, would we?

Not everyone's beliefs are worthy of respect or survival, act accordingly and stick up for yourself. There is no honour in letting bullshit slide in order to "maintain the peace."

Oh yeah, I remember why I wanted to do this! I did not plan on offending anyone, just because they follow a religion. I still respect them as human beings, I read a newspaper article that if you are trying to change someones mind the worst thing you can do for yourself is to offend the person you are trying to change. These are the values they have been taught from a very early age so offending them would be like attacking their beleifs and values. I probably did word my first post correctly but all I want to do is to make them question their beliefs because they are like sheep blindly following a sheppard not aware of what the hell is going on, make them question "Why the hell am I doing this?"

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

-Ezekiel 25-17

It's a misquote though.
