I recently heard (via Colbert Report) about a Republican congressman who opposed a formal apology to Blacks for slavery. He said something like: Do the Jews have to apologize for killing Jesus? HOW the fuck can he say that?! It pisses me off that someone like that can get democratically elected.

He was more than likely elected by a populace with very similar view points. That's one of the major problems with democracy; it means mob rule. If the majority of people believe something stupid, theres nothing stopping them from putting it into place. The people best suited for ruling aren't in charge. Of course, you can say the same thing about every other method of government...

EDIT: Although I don't think the government should apologize to blacks for slavery. No one involved with slavery is alive now, so we should just put it behind us. An apology for a social system weighted against black people would be much more appropriate.

EDIT2: Fixing spelling from previous edit...d'oh!

Hate speech is legal in the US. You can say whatever you want.

Not that I am doubting the Colbert Report at all, but is there a link to something a bit more...well..official? I hate to ask that since I am a fan of the show, but I can see how some of the jokes can be taken seriously.
