View Full Version : Am I going to hell?

I'm an athiest. I'm an athiest because life has made me fully confident that there is no god, that there cannot be a god, so the idea of going to hell is completely theoretical to me. I live my life completely morally, I try to do as much good for the world as possible, helping others whenever I can, giving to charities, trying to protect human rights. In some cases this may be contradictory to some people's ideas of morals such as supporting gay rights/ gay marriage, yet my life has given me every reason to believe these things are moral, and failure to support them would be immoral.
So I suppose one day I will die, and hypothetically assuming that there was a god, I would then supposedly be sent to be judged as to whether I am worthy for heaven or I am not and must be sent to hell. I would not apologize for not believing in god in my life since, undenyably, god honestly has given me no other reasons but to believe in what I do. I've done everything I could to live as morally as possible, and I would be willing to admit that I was wrong at least to god. Would this supposedly 'omnibenevolent' being still condemn me to spend an eternity in hell?
Yes. Yes He would. I'll meet you down there in the atheist section, and we can reminisce about our cushy lives on earth.
Haha, just kidding, God isn't real http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)
EDIT: I forgot to capitalize "He". Silly Christians making our language.

The Christian God? Yeah, probably. Not exactly the best justification for it, either.
A good God? No.

The Judaic Gods are sadists, therefore I wouldn’t be surprised if they send believers to hell too and that this is all a sick joke.
If any of the Judaic Gods are real, then I’m getting myself a tan!

You don't believe in god but you believe that IF he exists then so must the entire christian belief system. That's kinda weird.

No, I believe that'll get the most replies to this thread... if you wanna try to apply my question to another religion feel free to suggest what they would believe.

I'll be there.
I'm shur after a year or so of the constant burning and suffering our souls will be able to look past it and concentrate on other things.
I for one will be there with satan trying to devise a way to defeat god, that evil twisted prick he is.

Relax.
There is no such place as hell.
I assume the pope is a fairly authoritative source on this issue, so I will quote Pope John Paul II, who stated (in a private audience at the Vatican in 1999) that Hell is indeed not a location, but a state of mind we create for ourselves by choosing to cut ourself off from God.

Okay, would my mind create that state then as I have cut myself off from god?

Well if you're removed from God... it doesn't sound like it has the power to work that way, now does it?

It's my opinion that so long as an atheist lived a good life, he wouldn't go to Hell. Why would God send a good man to Hell for simply disbelieving?

Because by nature if you don't live a godly life, you don't live a good life, in the sense that God is all that is good.
It's just stupid pointless shit, just more fear propaganda put out by the big churches to scare ya'.

What exactly makes you think he would have any more knowledge on the subject than anyone else? Just because he was pope doesn't mean he as the answers.

If the Abrahamic religions are right then odds are you're going to hell. Then again most people are so it's not a big deal.
Now on the other hand one of the Dharmic religions(I forget which one) has an amusing story on the issue.
Apparently in this religion the way you get to "heaven" is by keeping the god always in your thoughts. So anyway there was this atheist who spent all his time denying the god, thinking about how everyone was stupid for believing in the god etc. Lo and behold when he dies ot his surprise he winds up in heaven. Apparently because the atheist's thoughts were always on god he managed to get in.
It's pretty silly actually.

Several billion people on the planet--not all of whom are Catholic, or even Christian-- agree that the pope is the supreme authority on Christian theology.
If you know of a more authoritative source than that, let us know.

Well, yes, he may be the supreme authority on the subject, but that doesn't necessarily mean his answer is definitive or even correct.
It's like the top researcher of extraterrestrial life saying that he knows whether or not there are aliens.

Why do you guys always have to start with the name calling?

Let's assume that *hell* is a metaphor, k?
Alright then. Hell is a metaphor for an absence of God. Technically, without God as the driving force in your life, you're already there. In hell. Without God.
It's not quite as bad as the brochure described it, is it?

dude, your not going to hell. there is no hell and the idea of there even being one is a rediculous story that was made up to keep people from doing stuff that their culture/religion is against.
if anything, suffering/pain of existance is hell, while dying and nothingness is heaven.
this is why i am beggining to become buddist, these were my beleifs since i was 14, and buddism is the closest relligion with these thoughts in mind.
