Alright, the seven deadly sins. Pride, Wrath, Greed, Envy, Lust, Vanity, and Sloth.

When written, they had different values to them. People worked, physical labor, for hours upon hours. Today a person may work behind a computer screen for 5 hours and book it back home. Does this constitute sloth? When culture has changed and that's become the norm, and to them, that IS a hard day's work. Is it really?

This is but one example.

My question is.. Do these sins change with the times, or will they always and forever mean the exact same thing, with the exact values as the time they were written?

Should cultural differences and advancements through time be considered?

I think the essence of a sin stays the same. Pride is pride no matter what the circumstance and each so called "sin" has negative effects on the self.

As far as sloth is concerned, people have things to do outside of work. It's a case of doing what needs to be done and not avoiding it or putting it off. There's always something to be done. And if you put everything off or avoid what you know has to be done, you aren't living.

To put it simply, Inaction makes for slow spiritual progression.

It's all about the spirit of things. Do you honestly feel like you're a hard worker?

If I were a delusional paranoiac, I'd say that the seven deadly sins were constructed to scare the proletariat into working harder. http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif)

Indeed. Sin is not a list of things not to do. Sin is an attitude that evidences itself by going against God's will.
