***Mods: Since this centers around a movie, maybe it should be in MP, I put it here because it is religion based. I apologize in advance***
My nephew rented this movie, which apparently either disturbed, upset, angered (or a combination) him quite badly. He insisted I rent it also, so yesterday I did.
Within 12 hours of renting it, I had watched it twice, which is all I will watch. I honestly cannot watch that movie without feeling deeply homicidal and wanting to go on a blatent killing spree.
The plot of the whole documentary (which is what it is, a documentary) is showing Evangelical kids and families, both at home, and at a church summer camp, "Kids on Fire".
The parents in the movie are severely lacking in the brain department, the most notable being the mom who declares to her home-schooled son that out of all the possible theories for the Universe's creation, the Creation theory is the valid one because, "Theres just no other way".
Other disturbing bits of the film include:
1]Children praying before, and laying hands on, a cardboard cutout of George W. Bush
2]About 100 kids crying their collective ass off, praying and begging for God to end abortion in the US.
3]The childrens youth leader declaring she wants these kids [The Evangelical kids] to lay down their lives in great numbers just like the Muslims do.
4]Statement by Rev. Ted Haggard (Who was kicked out for buying meth and getting a "massage" from a faggot)that THEY control the Presidental election.
Most of you are watching this going, "We already knew they were fucked, big deal". I thought the same thing before watching the movie.
If you haven't seen it, its only 84 minutes line, and WELL worth it.

very disturbing. Im glad nothing like that around me. It made we want to kidnap a few of those kids and force them to watch a handfull of documentaries on science and religion in the world.

I just hope you know that the people in that movie are nothing like the average Christian.

I am aware of this. However, this is one reason why the Christian religion is so full of shit: There are over 50 "branches" of Christianity; Baptist, Southern Baptist, Pentecostal, 7th Day, etc.. every one of them preaches THEIR road is right, the OTHER roads are wrong. They do this while reading from the SAME Bible, worshipping the SAME God.
Its complete absurdity! Imagine if the Nazi's had split among such ridiculous things as, "I want our armbands to be red! No blue! No yellow!" All of them heil Hitler, all of them committed to their Reich, but all of them acting like fools over something trivial.
This is how the Christian faith operates. Not only are other religions wrong, but other Denominations also. While Jesus Camp may be focusing on the Evangelists, the VAST majority of the behavior shown in the film is demonstrated by the VAST majority of "Christians". Don't forget, it was an "average" Christian who, in an attempt to stop unborn babies from dying, killed an abortion doctor with a shotgun in the parking lot.
the film didn't do anything to me apart from bore me. sure, there may be people like that, but they are like no one i have ever met. i guess living in australia i won't meet someone like that.
it is too far removed for me to take seriously, and i already knew the US was run by religious fanatics.
also, i don't think it means too much. kids will belive whatever you tell them. is it mean? maybe, but i don't really give a shit about kids, i'd bet most of them end up on totse questioning reality soon enough anyway.

Best to just hope those kids will somehow find their way past all the brainwashing.
I suffered through southern baptist private school, Our Lady of Mercy catechism and being shuffled around by Pentacostal relatives who went to church 4 days a week throughout my entire adolescence.
I found my way out, and I also took alot from it. Also, kids these days aren't nearly as impressionable as they were before the information blitz this generation is experiencing.

It is frighteningly blatant brainwashing, it's true.
My favorite scene is when the ten year old with the rat-tail haircut explains that he became a born again Christian at age 5 "because I just wanted more out of life." I wonder how many times his parents told him that?

There truly is no such thing as a "Christian Child" or a "Muslim Child" or a "Jewish Child". They are CHILDREN, who unfortunately are saddled with their parent's favorite brand of devotion.
Sad to see the misnomer attach itself to them before the children can even mature to the point to ask themselves: "What should I believe in?".

I stated this in the other thread, but it deserves mention here too - Children should be exposed to ALL religious faiths before being branded a Christian, a Muslim, etc...

Those are some pretty scary Christians. I'm glad I wasn't raised like that.

ya, the choice between froot loops and cheerios was just to much to handle.
if these people were in my neighbourhood i would harass these people so much, verbaly and mentaly, hopefully making the kids think twice. But I bet these people are so isolated they have no idea about outside opinions.

They shouldn't be branded by religion, ever. Nor should anyone else be for that matter.
Children should be exposed to logic, rationality and how the world fucking works before they start ramming inane, fairy-tale bullshit down their throats.

In a perfect world, no, they shouldn't. But this is unfortunately an imperfect world where most individuals grow up and just adopt the religion of their parents or community, for stupid reasons like social status and fear of being ostracized for believing in the rational.

Jesus Camp was posted on Google Video. I am not sure if it has been pulled already. When going on the site there is a message that the video may not be presently available. Then it says to refresh the page and it may be there. ???
Any way here is the digg page that has the link to the Google Video Page. It is the full movie. But it may have been pulled already.

This is why I laugh when people say that Christianity is somehow inherently better then Islam. They're both equally nutty it's just that in the West we have a strong secular tradition that keeps the nuts in check. If we were to abandon that tradition like a certain section of Americans advocate we'd be stoning people for adultery just like they do in Saudi Arabia.
Religion as currently defined is by and large a dead end and should be shunned.

I really pity these kids. It's sad to see how little children are indoctrinated with these ridiculous beliefs, with no choice. And people in this country are freaked out by the Hitler Youth or Octobrists.
