Before the rise of Mohammed, streets in Mecca and much of Arabia were squalid and rampant with alcoholism, prostitution and gambling; children were sacrificed to Pagan deities; women were regarded as livestock and often buried alive; and society was stagnant. Mohammed changed this when he banished paganism, he made it a mandatory duty to help the poor (Zakat) and he promoted Scientific advancement, ("Look for knowledge, even as far as China") and the concept that religion should advance along with the times (Ijtehad). Sadly, all of the progressive concepts in Islam are forgotten in most Muslim states. The Saudi Arabian kingdom is a corrupt and tyrannical dictatorship, and many, (if not, most) Muslims live in poverty and resort to militancy. Although the Koran promotes Jihad, militant leaders are promoting its use to resolve any conflicts. Several Muslims who support these leaders are unemployed and illiterate. Science is rejected across several Islamic states, and religious laws written 1,300 years ago have gone unchanged. In 1962, Saudi diplomat Abdullah Tariki proposed a reformation across the country that would promote social liberalization and democracy. Needless to say, it was completely ignored. It is up to the silent moderate marjority of Muslims and their state leaders to lead a new reformation across Islamic states. The future of the faith depends on it.
