I was wondering if I bought an irda USB adapter from newegg, would I be able to point my tv remote at it and have it record the Ir codes? what programs will i need to record the codes?

I use my PSP (playstation portable)'s infrared as a universal remote, and I want to be able to record my own codes (such as my garage door) so I can open it with my psp.

Any help would be awesomely appreciated, thanks!

if you are trying to use this to capture someone else code you may not have much luck since you need a decent line of site, and more and more remotes are radio operated because they work better.

i would try using video recording software set to the same usb port the irda adapter is on and take a look at the codes.

the codes may not make sense but you will at least know which #'s being pushed coincide with each code.

check out the text files sections here too.. maybe there is some more info on capturing infrared.

let us know.

I meant like pointing my garage door opener remote to the USB device, will it record the code with Girder? will any usb irda device work?

i have no idea what girder is.. but if it records then maybe you can use it.

there are plenty of other recording programs out there for free (at least in linux).. select the one that is easiest and best for you.

the reason i suggested video recording software was because ir lies more in a visual spectrum than audio.

i understand what you are trying to do; you need to record the actions of the remote(s) and then put them in your psp.

good luck.

Build one! Thats what I did.

How to Build (http://lnx.manoweb.com/lirc/)

WinLIRC (http://winlirc.sourceforge.net/)

So build one of thoose, then run WinLIRC to capture the codes. Then you can get a WinLIRC plugin for girder and do all kinds of cool shit. It works really well. I got all my parts from radio shack for about 10$ I have to make some adjustments to the circuit because the RS reciver module is slightly different from the one she uses.

This should help you out aswell. http://www.lirc.org/receivers.html

If you need more help lemmie know, I can take pics if you want.

EDIT: garage doors use radio waves not IR
