I have no idea about radio stuff or anything but I was just curious how they went about this and if they used some kind of scanner or something to find the frequency.

i could never do this cause i dont have the money for anything like this but I am still quite curious.

Well, most fast food restaurants work in the Lo-Band VHF frequencies, I think; it's public information. You just need to have a transceiver capable of accessing the frequency, which you can pick up on ebay easily, or your local radio shop.
