Be it Heaven or the next reincarnation, whatever. Atheists, please pretend that it's true. Just for a bit.
Personally, I believe that there are 2 requirements:
1) Try to live a good life, and love/help others, while admitting wrongdoings.
2) Thinking about religion. For example, not just saying "I'm Catholic/Atheist/Protestany/Buddhist/Jewish, etc. Think about it.
Do whatever the fuck you want, repent before you die, and *voila!* free pass.

k, I'll humor it.
It seems like living a positive present life would just somehow "grandfather" you into the positive afterlife. Extra bonus points should be rewarded to those who do it on their own volition, without the carrot & stick of a promised salvation.

I often flirt with the question What if I am wrong? Being an athiest who doesn't believe in an afterlife I, for lack of a better term, try and have "all the bases covered". I respect all peoples and all that they can accomplish, I donate to charity, I live a modest life, etc. So even now if a God says that living this life isn't enough I would rather suffer the consequences then live in eternity with an evil grinch who went to church every sunday.

Well put.
But in my book, the afterlife is sort of a gimme--you don't have to do anything--although once your soul has no further use for the present body, you DO need to choose whether to reincarnate or remain in Spirit.
