It's common fucking knowledge that Christianity tricks you into believing there's something inherently wrong with you, then convincing you that the only way you can be saved and given eternal happiness is through making Christ lord of your life and asking for forgiveness. It's a pretty good con in and of itself, but then they also teach you that blaspheming against the holy spirit is cause for eternal damnation, trapping you in the religion.

So let's see. God was condemning people to hell right left and center because they weren't following him. Then, feeling bad, he wanted to give them a second chance. You don't have to be a good person, all you have to do is subscribe to this super duper ideology. In fact, it really helps God's cause if you do manipulative, immoral things to spread these ideas, because all "God" cares about is "souls" and not lives it seems.

But the best thing about it is you can tweak the scripture almost any way you want to push your own motives onto other people.

I'll tell you what you're supposed to do in that scenario. In the name of self-preservation, you lie through your teeth and tell the raving lunatic gunman in front of you that you not only see the astronaut, but that you can describe the astronaut in full detail down to it's boots.

You desire salvation. Salvation from what, exactly? You desire to spend life eternal in a paradise-like setting, okay. That seems great. Who wouldn't desire that? But just because we truly desire it doesn't mean that it exists. I truly WANT to be able to get rewarded for every good action or positive thought I exhibit too, but the fact is, I probably won't, unless it's in this life.

Why live your whole life to expect what you know is highly improbable of happening, all the while knowing deep down that you don't really believe in it? That's just not a very good strategy, in my opinion. You could expend more mental energy in a more positive, life-affirming way by continuing to do what you're already doing: examining your life and striving to shape your own beliefs about the world. You can worry about the afterlife when you die, when your alleged spirit somehow magically transports beyond death all these emotional desires you harbour towards living forever.

To go back to your own analogy: Don't let the metaphorical gunman (your irrational desires) who makes you see the non-existent astronaut (God/Heaven) twist up your rationale to the point of not ever being able to recover from the ruse you played along with to save your ass.
