Okay, i'll start off my saying that I know NOTHING about scanners and such. A lot of members in my family are firefighters, so i've always enjoyed listening to them.

Anyway, I was on a field trip in downtown charleston, it got boring so me and a few friends chilled out on Marion Square. We were calling numbers out of our phones and my friend from Miami called a number and started listining to the Miami FD scanner!!?? Does anyone know about this listining through a phone or is it fake? Just wondering because I thought it'd be pretty cool if I could listen locally. I know this probably sound stupid to some of you but i've never heard of this.

sounds like a phone patch to me. Canterbury mountian radio service has a couple here(HF)and ive used them thru AREC.

did you talk at all? if its a patch someone should speak back asking for call/ect.

mabey it could be used for FD ppl to use to recieve infomation on the way to the station/responding when they dont have a radio handy.(I know nothing about american fire services, kiwi FF jump in the car and travel to the fire station first.) (in gereral)

if one could talk down it, i would expect a password to stop unorthorised use.

CMRS uses a big one

I don't believe that they can hear me. When I call it just says "Standby For Live Radio Audio" then I can hear the transmissions.
