View Full Version : Is Hell Real?
Lou Reed

I was thinking. Recently I haven't really done drugs much and was really fuckin bored
do you think hell is real. Drugs are like an artistic gateway to heaven. Expressionism and form and all that shit.
Well the Apocalypse is in the past sense and i'm kinda bothered by this. Angels control the universe and 'wow' it is special when we achieve something new. Fuck it, all that is frowned upon!

I'm not with you, Lou Reed - but I do have a comment:
Just as drugs might seem to be an artistic expression of heaven - in that same sense, moral guiltripping and fear of the Great Punisher in the Sky could be seen as a form of expressionism regarding the hell myth.
All useless, in my opinion.
But it's cute reading about people who have these kinds of drug-induced religious revelations. At least they have the benefit of claiming: "The drugs made me think it!"

All religion is drug induced.

It sure seems like it!
"Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes"
Preacher: C'mon, man! Have faith in God!
Skeptic: No! It doesn't seem right!
Preacher: Just accept Him! Or else!
Skeptic: Or else what?
Preacher: Or else you'll burn!
Skeptic: Burn ... what?!
Preacher: Try it! Try it! It'll make ya feeeeel gooooood.
Skeptic: But what if I get hooked?
Preacher: That's the point!
Skeptic: But I don't want to be dependent on anything!
Preacher: Go ahead. You know you want to.
Skeptic: No thanks. I'll pass.
Preacher: SWALLOW IT! OR ELSE! *thumps Bible*

I don't think you are going to find anyone who has been to hell to confirm that it exists, so I think that skepticism is a safe way to go. The idea of hell is only used to scare weak minded people into a life of servitude. Don't question anything or you will go to hell!

Here are some of my thoughts on hell.

As said often, hell is not a place but a state of consciousness.
Hell is fear, dread, confusion etc.
If you were to walk the earth and feel nothing but love and clarity of mind wherever you went, whatever you did etc, you would say you were in heaven.
If you walked the earth feeling nothing but fear, dread confusion whatever, you would say that you were in hell.
Hell is fear
Heaven is love
They are not places to go after you die. They are states of being.
Through Jesus you can get to a heavenly state of being because Jesus teaches how to love and how to have faith in yourself as an immortal soul. Jesus is A salvation from fear, but not the only one. Anybody and anything can be someones salvation.
And as far as people who do "terrible" things are concerned. It is fear that directs there life towards doing fucked up shit. They are likely to be experiencing a hellish state already. They too need salvation and they need to be shown love, not hatred and punishment.

No such thing as Hell. Its just an interperetation of the Greek underworld that got mixed into Israel's Ben-hinnom Valley descriptions from the Book of Kings. Before ze jooz were ousted and assimilated into other kingdoms, there never was one mention of a place called Hell. There was a Sheol, but it isn't what we think Hell is.
After all, the keepers of the Jewish Temple believed in neither Heaven nor Hell. Its just fearmongering to scare people into not killing and raping each other.

^ Well said.
Cheers.
We ARE in hell. Haven't you found it a bit odd that everyone is selfish and cruel? That even the religious people who preach love and benevolence just use it to gain power and oppress you? The nice people I know are atheists. It fits perfectly

They're not the preaching type you meet on the internet
I didn't say all of the atheists are nice now did I? In fact, bulk of them are as annoying as the religious preachers

What's happening in 2 or 3 years? Are they going to start growing horns, and a tail?

Why do you think they speak out on the internet so much? As opposed to real life?
I'll tell you why:
They aren't belief-peddlers. They aren't pushy people. They don't try to "convert" people. They aren't like Christians, who believe it is their job to "save people" and point out to rational people what the error in their thinking is. They are far more respectful to the theists than the theists are to them. In fact, most of them just go by the good old philosophy of "turn the other cheek", when they are repeatedly told that they're going to burn to a crisp in a fiery inferno. They would dare not act like raving lunatics and raise their children to believe that everyone who wasn't a skeptic was doomed to harsh judgement, and then hell. Odds are, people probably know more atheists than they think they do, due to the fact that they AREN'T vocal about it in public. You'd think the way Christians describe people of no faith, that they'd stick out like a sore thumb in society. But they don't. They just blend right in. They don't wear their emotions on their sleeves about what they believe in.
They often exhibit less hate, prejudice, implied superiority and bigotry towards other human beings than most theists do. They reserve their debates and arguments for the appropriate time and place, which happens to be on the World Wide Web, on messageboard forums like this which invite discussions on beliefs. When was the last time you saw an atheist group rent one of those big tents and have a "revival"? When was the last time you saw an atheist get any real airtime on television to spout their worldviews for all to hear?
So you see, the skeptics have been just kicking back passively and watching the world get more and more fucked up with each passing day, all the while remaining hopeful that one day the entire world will finally wake up and realize that there are morals to be had, goodness to be found, and positive lives to lead WITHOUT being a slave to their supernatural, absentee "creators". They've come to grow a bit tired of having religion shoved in their face at every passing turn. They've come to grow a little resentful about being forced to live in societies that will ostracize them for their absence of belief. They have learned from history how religion has permeated every nook and cranny of public affairs, and they were not at all suprised to see it start lapsing back to times past when religion even dictated what people could do to their own bodies!
They just got fed up with it. A few started speaking out. Others joined in. They put their heads together. They realized that the only way to make things any better and hopefully shape a more rational worldview is to get the fuck out of the closet, and start creating awareness about it. They don't organize themselves, for the most part, although they do have their own niche on the internet. As it turned out, there were MANY other people who embraced rational thought and didn't believe in a supernatural creator or an afterlife. They realized there were already existing organizations like The Council for Secular Humanism (http://www.secularhumanism.org) and Humanist Society (http://www.humanist-society.org) and The Brights (http://www.the-brights.net/), where there were other rational freethinkers who shared most, if not all of the views they held themselves.
They are so relieved to see that there truly ARE people who share their worldview that have decided to stop taking it lying down. They are eager and excited and proud to help raise awareness. And what better place to start than the internet? Surely you can reach more people than you would parading up and down the street, and surely they would offend less people.
Imagine how the Christians would feel if they had "In Allah We Trust" etched onto their currency? They'd riot. Think they'd like sending their kids to school to recite "One nation under Allah"? They'd sooner rob their kids of the education than submit them to that kind of thought! I bet they'd be even more incensed if the prophet Muhammed dictated their laws and seeped his way into their COURTS! You think people of faith would just take it with a grain of salt? I don't.
So if it seems to anyone here on the internet that there has been an unusually large number of skeptics challenging religion and trying to peddle their secular views by "preaching" to the rest of the world, just remember: It was due. Looooong overdue. Let's stop persecuting the little guy with the big voice who dares speak out against the majority, and give them the space they need to air their grievances regarding organized religion.

If we don't obey God he sends us to an eternity of pain and sufferings and burning and fire and hate and misery....but he loves us?
No matter what someone does to me, if I loved them I could never send them to hell.
That remainds me, i need to make a thread about weather or not you can ask for forgivness while your in hell
