I always thought that it was based on Hinduism but Hinduism has separate "Creater, preserver, destroyer" gods, and Sikhism apparently believes that only one God represents all of them. I guess that it mostly incorporates philosophies from Hinduism and Islam(such as the monotheistic part). Anyway, it is definitely a religion that was based on the social inequalities in India as they make it a point to regard all races and both genders as equals.
It is just another religion that believes in God and that we need salvation. "The goal of human life is to break the cycle of birth's and deaths and merge with God."

Sikhs dont have GODS they have their GURUS, and they believe them as GOD.
Sikhs never cut theri hairs, wear a turban, among some other weird things. But i want to also add that sikhism was originated from hinduism, not as the guy above me suggested :P

Actually Sikhism emerged from the war that was going on between Bhakti Hindus and Sufi Muslims about God. It was found by Guru Nanak, who rejected the blind rituals of the Muslims and Hindus and believed their fighting to be silly, if I'm not mistaken.
They're monotheists, believing in one God revealed to them by the ten Gurus, whose teachings you must accept to be a Sikh, in the holy text Shri Guru Granth (it was written by the fifth Guru but updated to contain the teachings of all subsequent Gurus).
They're main goal is to break the cycle of life and death to merge with God. They repeat his name to themselves throughout the day to not forget him, believe in reincarnation and have a code of conduct.

Hare_Geist has it pretty much right apart from the beginning
It was not emerged from any war of such. Guru Nanak Dev Ji being nonormal child would always have his mind on remembering God. He would look around at the people of the other religions and find so much hypocracy and how things have changed. He never found the full truth in any religion....partly due to the fact that most people stopped following their religion properly and started adding things. He dissapeared into water for 3 day and evryone thought he was dead. When he came out of water the first thing he said was
Ek Onkar There is only One God
Sat Naam Truth is his name
Karta Purkh He is the creator
Nir Bhau He is without fear
Nir Vair He is without hate
Akaal Moorat He is immortal, without form
Ajooni He is beyond birth and death
Saibhang He is self-illuminated
Gur Parsaad He is realised by the kindness of the true Guru.

He was born into a Hindu family but blatently refused Hinduism as he found so many useless rituals in it, so much hypocracy, so much division and inequality.
