View Full Version : MySQL errors

You may have experienced a MySQL server error by now. I'm investigating the cause of this instability and trying to find a fix, but it may take a couple of days and the BBS may be unavailable from time to time while this gets straightened out.

Please bear with me while this gets worked out.

Just wondering.. why is PM feature disabled?

Not very many people like avatars/signatures and all that but a lot want PM feature. :)

We're already having problems with the database, adding PM's into it would just make it worse.

Thanks for fixing the way it sorts threads. Is there a way to turn off the post minimun? It won't let us just quote someone when we think they have a good point. You have to add something to it.

Maybe the SQL errors are from the UBB mover accessing the database at the same time as vBulletin?

Jeff, you should hang around a bit more, i think you may get to like the frankenstein's, or, hunter's monster youve created.

HB needs our IMG tags back, and PM's would be nice.

Oh, and I've been a faithful HB poster since it began. Ive been there for the retarded moments and the intelligent sparks. I think i would make a great mod for the forum. Just asking for you to consider it.

Aside from the post, quote, new topic, etc. icons, everything is looking really good cosmetically speaking. Of course, some fine tuning to get rid of database errors would really help.

I think you integrated Vbulletin seamlessly into the site itself. I noticed that the tabs on the left don't touch the sides of the browser window like they did on UBB and that it is integrated better a little better than UBB was. More functions, and it seems to load quicker (now) than UBB did. I don't exactly like how the threads are displayed, but it is just something I have to get used to I guess.

Good job Jeff, I am proud of you. =P

Nope. The converter only runs once a day, during the system's least-used hours in the middle of the night. After tonight's run I'm going to disable it.

I did find a couple of problems. PHP was configured to be too generous allocating time to processes, so MySQL would run out of threads.

The network card on the db server is having problems -- errors are showing up in the system message log. (I think I've fixed this with ethtool.)

MySQL was configured with some less-than-optimal settings for the size of database we have. I increased the memory allocation to better fit the size of database, but what I really need is to get more memory for the database server. I'm figuring out how much is needed right now. Looks like it's going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-8GB.

Lastly, MySQL is using MyISAM tables for the database, and there are known problems with large tables stored as MyISAM files if those tables are frequently updated (lock contention problems), so I'm probably going to convert some of the key tables (posts, threads, users) over to InnoDB tables which don't have that limitation.

That's mind-bottling.

UPDATE:

There have been no more ethernet errors since I changed the card settings.

I got a crash course in the care and feeding of MySQL server databases last night. The BBS is now set up to use InnoDB tables, which should solve a number of problems that we were having. I've also optimized the settings the db server uses for managing InnoDB tables.

I still need to add memory to the db server, but that won't happen until later this week. Until that happens, the system won't be as fast as it could be.

Hopefully things will run a bit smoother now.

Hey Jeff,

Just out of curiosity, what kind of hardware is Totse running on?

I am pretty sure I read the hardware in teh FAQ, but I am wondering if that is kept up-to date.

Thanks!

Jeff, Why are all the administrative positions fucked up?
How come is acidmelt now a regular, Zok a simple mod and Momentary Lapse Of Reason a super-moderaor?
Also, why did many mods lost their moderator title? They've not returned to regular status, but just don't have any title.
And I've seen some people with "Acolyte" title. What the different titles mean?

Problem solved.

As for the messages taxing the server resources, enforce a strict PM limit that will force users to remove old PM's to make room for new ones, and will reduce storage requirements.

Jeff, i know you don't have time to look at my individual question, but anyone that can awnser it to the best of their ability, that would be wonderful.

Is this why I can't post any new topics? And why was i last logged in in the 1970s?

0_o

robinhoody
2007-04-19, 16:12
Your last logged in date was January 1, 1970 because you had never logged in to vBulletin before today, which means the database still had a default timestamp, which would be 0.

The timestamp is measured in "UNIX time", which is a count of the seconds since the UNIX epoch began, which was on January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 GMT.

Since your log in timestamp was 0, it was the equivalent of January 1, 1970.

Please bear with me while this gets worked out.

That one hurt my eyes. Wouldn't it be "bare", like if someone said to another, "Bare your pain along with me!", or, "Bare your pain to me, my friend, and I will soothe it like a savage beast!"? Talking about an animal, while referring to the toleration or commiseration of someone's pain just seems weird, so weird I can hardly bear it.

robinhoody
2007-04-24, 04:37
That one hurt my eyes. Wouldn't it be "bare"...No, Jeff used the correct "bear", as in "put up with something or somebody unpleasant".

-SpectraL
2007-04-24, 13:32
No, Jeff used the correct "bear", as in "put up with something or somebody unpleasant".

I would tend to agree with you, but the dictionary seems to indicate otherwise:

8. to open to view; reveal or divulge: to bare one's arms; to bare damaging new facts. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bare

One could just as easily have said "to bare one's pain", instead of "to bare one's arms (not that I'd ever bare that jack-ass at a party or anything! God forbid! ahem...ahem...)" Now, if I was to bare my pain to you, and wanted you to commiserate with me on that, could I not ask you "Bare my pain with me, friend!"? Or would I, instead, refer to a furry mammal, when I ask you to put up and share in the unpleasant experience?

I'm not sure, but I think I just ownt you robinhoody.

[EDIT] Ok. Not wanting you to look bad or anything, I researched it further. It seems we have a contradiction in our own tools of learning. When we go to the same source, we find this:

32. bear with, to be patient or forbearing with: Please bear with me until I finish the story.

So it appears both responses are correct, bare and bear.

Sorry to trouble you.

robinhoody
2007-04-24, 17:52
No, both words are not correct. Only "bear" was the correct spelling.

Jeff was not asking anyone to open, expose, reveal, or uncover anything (bare). He was asking people to deal with something unpleasant (bear).
