Is it wrong to mock people who still take the bible word for word as literal truth handed down by god? Who still believe the earth is only 6000 years old? I don't think so.

no, infact that is why the U.S. was founded
They should be pushed far into the margins of society.

NO, infact my social studies teacher believes in the literal interpretation of the bible. She doesn't cut her hair, wear pants, or do alot of weird things, but she also hates the things typical christians do abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage. So for one assignment we had to write a paper about something we truly believe in. I saw my teachers car that afternoon with a bumper sticker proudly displaying "marriage is between a man and a woman". I decided to write my paper on gay marriage. It was a vary well written paper where I clearly stated that I support gay marriage. She took off 5 points for having a "vague topic"

I'd be fucking pissed...you should goto the principal and bitch about that one...make sure to point out the bumper sticker on her car. she's biased and took it out on you.

Ditto. You may have been goading her, but she shouldn't of done that (plus I really dislike the idea of marriage being between man and woman only).

I am just dumbfounded to learn that a teacher would even discuss personal views like that with one (or more) of their students. I don't believe in depersonalizing an instructor that you spend several hours of your life with each week in school, and it's good to learn certain things about people in order to be able to relate to them more - but did her students really need to know where she stood on those certain issues?
She should spend more time doing what the state/private institution pays her to do while she's at work, which is to teach social studies. Save her opinions for discussion with her peers, on her time.
Take it all the way to the school board, kurdt. Stir some shit up.

I would say it is wrong to mock them (although, I'm guilty of doing just that!). This world is all about perspective, and those who would choose to push against the majority and live in a world of faith are entitled to do so.

I agree.
However, I have been attacked for not believing in things that Christians do, so if they want that respect it must be mutual.
I have trouble being friends with someone who deep down inside believes that I should burn in hell.

i do as a personal choice to make myself feel better and to cope with the fact that there is no afterlife. :)
Of course its not, mocking people who believe what the bible says is true is like mocking people who think that they have super powers because they can light gasoline on fire.

It is comparable to a toddler taking a Bernstein Bears book and taking it entirely literally. Sure it has some morals, but bears can't talk. These fundies are clueless, just ask the people who wrote the book they're quoting, the Jews.

I point out the logical fallacies associated with their religion. It passes the time, and I like to have potentially life-changing debates with folks.
Some don't even make it to the point where I'm quoting scripture when they take a swing at me.
Making fun of them only gets so far, but taking them apart on a base level is where you should be looking.
I completely agree that the fundies (and even some of the liberal Xians) are deluded, and personally I make fun of them all the time, like when they cuss I reply with "I don't think baby Jesus appreciates that one"... the best! But if you want a job and social acceptance, it pays to just ignore and call yourself an agnostic in public and laugh all day at home. XD
edit: this may be just me because I live in Utah where half the pop. is mormon judgemental bastards

Sucks to be you, bro.
I'm dead center in the middle of 5 (count 'em) 5 mormon wards. The shit that I have to put up with borders on absurdist "I'll pray for you" to "You're going to burn in hell for that"
I just ask them if they get any special powers from their religion. "DO YOU GET ICE BREATH IF YOU'RE A REALLY GOOD MORMON?!?"
THEY>"wtf? no!"
ME>"Then why are you mormon?"
THEY>"..."
ME>"It seems like a lot of bullshit, to me. Maybe you could explain Joseph Smith's 6 convictions of being a con-man better than historical documents of the period"
THEY>"He wasn't a con man, he was a prophet!"
ME>"Nuh-uh! *shows website* See? History:1 Mormon bullshit:0"
THEY>"..."
I guess ppl are deluded, all you can do is help them see the error of their ways and help them be better members of society, don't be one of them and force shit onto them... gently push them in the correct direction... yeah the only thing mormons are good for is raising kids, they're so moral (read mormon) and clean *shudders* no kids for me :D

Those girls are freaks in bed, though. I've never met a girl from outside the church who fucks with half the "Oh shit, I'm going to hell for this" enthusiasm that mormon girls do.
Seriously. Just pretend like you're gonna marry them, give 'em 3 weeks, they'll be tearing their panties on the way down.
"I love you" has never worked faster or with better effect for me.
But the others kinda figure it out after a while, and only the truly slutty mormon chicks will wanna date you after that fact.
yeah, i fucking love those girls, n they wont date til they're 16 and they put countdowns on their myspaces and have guys camp outside their houses the night before their bdays rofl i love it mormon girls are the best

I didn't realize Mormons were so lascivious.
Why aren't there more of them, if they supposedly fuck like jackrabbits? Or is this just a new trend?

It's the result of being told "NO SEX" for a long period of time, then being told "GO GET 'EM"
All mormons are like that, seriously. Go forth and multiply, and all that jazz.
It's really funny, in a sick "oh fuck, I'm gonna DESTROY this girl" kinda way.
And a lot of them are into the fucked up stuff, too. I've had one who wanted me to beat the hell out of her, then fuck her senseless.
(I didn't do the former, only the latter)
^^^ QFT, btw acolytes are upgrades of new arrivals (methinks), so you're higher ranked than me although i do have a cool name :D

the problem is the majority are the ones who favor faith

We are all members of the free world. FUCK anyone who would deny me the right to mock or criticize anyone else. We are all flawed and we should all be constantly reminded.
ESPECIALLY fundamentalist wastes of skin.

Nah its not wrong, its your opinion.
I used to think it was okay to bash Mormons, due to their completely ungrounded beliefs regarding Jesus sailing to America and setting up a tribe of traveling Israelites. I figured that since ol' Joe Smith was such a con man, it was okay to bash their faith structure.
The same applied for astrologists, psychics, etc.
Then there were those types of Christians, like the OP was talking about. Contradictions and such an immense lack of evidence, made it okay in my mind to think these people were fools.
Then one day, it hit me. Christianity and religion in general is completely full of contradictions and immense lack of evidence. It doesn't matter if they believe a God created them, or that they evolved from pubic hair left by Aliens from the Planet X. It's all an equal crock of shit... and the only thing that Christianity has working for it is two thousand years of tradition and a history of genius marketing techniques.
So to answer your question... yes. It is okay to bash die hard Christians. But if you're not bashing the moderate Christians, or people of any other religious, metaphysical faith, regardless of popularity or social acceptance... then it makes you out to be one huge hypocrite!
Christianity does not deserve a pedestal above the other faiths of the world. Even the "insane" ones.

I'm an equal-opportunity faith-basher. I just lump everyone from a single faith into one stereotype and ridicule them as though that stereotype applied to every aspect of them.
Muslims? Terrorists.
Christians? Right-wing psychotics.
Mormons? Deluded morons.
Scientologists? Deluded morons.
Ramtha-ists? Deluded morons.
*-cultists? Deluded morons.
Catholics? Child molesters.
Satanists? Angsty teenagers.
Wiccans? Angsty teenagers.
Atheists? Angsty teenagers.
Buddhists? Zen monks with martial arts skills.
Everyone gets ripped on. It's equality, it's american. It's your DUTY!

Hmmmm lets see if anyone in this thread has a brain.*scrolls through thread* Nope. *leaves thread*
That includes you by the way.
Anyway no it is not wrong to mock people for being fundamentalists. When you hold vocal beliefs that are contrary to all scientific consensus and common knowledge and morals it is mockery is absolutely justifiable. Is it wrong to mock a vocal racist? A vocal eugenicist? Of course not, their beliefs and attempts at conversion seriously undermine the societal moral fabric and the bonds of unity. Is it wrong to mock a flat earthist? You bet your ass it isn't. Asinine beliefs that are completely contrary to all knowledge, common or otherwise, indicate either the lack of comprehension, the lack of ability of comprehension or blind stubbornness. The first case is argument from ignorance, and education rather than mockery is the appropriate action. In the second case it is mental incapacity and treatment is the most viable option. However the third case able to understand, but choses not to. He choses ignorance. If you willingly chose ignorance, you deserve to be mocked
